The idea of Maghweb and Wrocławska Fundacja Filmowa behind Bright Lights was to promote art and cinema as tools for debate and youth participation in the civic and social life of two different inland areas of Europe, that of the Sicani, in Sicily, and that of Lower Silesia, in Poland. In the analysis of needs, which took place during the preliminary phases of the project, it emerged from both rural contexts how the demographic problems common to all inland areas of Europe have contributed to generating mistrust on the part of young people in the possibility of playing a relevant role within their own territory. These are now driven to move away from their places of origin because they are deprived of stimulating and formative contexts for city life and the regeneration of the territory. As a result of this forced emigration and the ageing of the inhabitants, Maghweb wanted to respond to the severe shortage of educational offerings for young people and the lack of meeting spaces by proposing intercultural paths that are enriching and stimulating for young residents. In order to provide concrete answers to the needs identified by the young people, Maghweb developed the entire project by focusing all the planned activities on the construction of knowledge-building and exchange practices for the social and cultural development of the target territories. The Bright Lights participation process during all its phases pursued the following objectives: O.G.: Promoting culture as a tool for youth participation. O.S.1: Improving the organisational capacities in the field of youth cultural provision in rural areas O.S.2: Improving young people's capacities to produce cultural content for civic participation O.S. 3: Strengthening the role of young people as primary actors for the cultural development of the territory.
