The project was designed in response to specific needs identified in the Cruillas neighbourhood of Palermo, including: low youth participation in civic life, neglect of public spaces (particularly properties confiscated from the mafia), high school dropout rates, and a lack of structured dialogue between young people and local institutions. The main objectives of the project were: To establish an informal youth council active in the neighbourhood, capable of proposing and implementing initiatives and fostering dialogue with stakeholders and institutions. To promote youth participation and generational renewal in the processes of care and co-management of public spaces. To foster active citizenship through non-formal educational activities and meetings between young people and institutional representatives. To enhance the value of Terra Franca, a property confiscated from organised crime and assigned to HRYO, transforming it into a hub for community engagement and environmental education. To encourage the development of new youth-led project proposals and strengthen connections between young people, schools, civil society organisations and local institutions. Through workshops, public events, non-formal training, and participatory processes, the project aimed to empower a group of young people to become key actors in transforming their neighbourhood, while also reinforcing HRYO’s role as a facilitator of youth participation and promoter of safe, inclusive community spaces.
