The LIAS – ACT 1 project was born with the aim of addressing the social, cultural, and emotional distress experienced by many young people following the COVID-19 pandemic. The team, particularly the R.E.M.S. association, felt the urgent need to address the decline in young people's participation in public and cultural life, as well as the increasingly widespread sense of isolation and disorientation, especially in Salento and other areas of Southern Italy. With this project, we wanted to create a safe, creative, and participatory space where young people could regain self-confidence, rediscover their role in society, and develop concrete tools for self-expression and active participation. The primary goal was to foster youth empowerment through theater, understood not as a simple artistic form, but as an educational, social, and transformative tool. We wanted to support a generation that, after months of closures and silence, was struggling to rediscover relationships, inspiration, and motivation. In many areas of Southern Italy, the context was already fragile before the pandemic, and the health emergency has further exacerbated the lack of reference points, cultural spaces, and opportunities for young people. Through a shared analysis (Problem Tree), the team identified the lack of expressive tools and spaces for participation as one of the key issues. Hence the idea of using theater as an educational experience capable of releasing energy, creating connections, and promoting a new form of active participation. The activities were designed to accompany young people on a journey of self-discovery and discovery of others, building cohesive groups based on trust and sharing. The theater work—using improvisation and emotional dramaturgy techniques—stimulated profound reflections on topics such as youth distress, identity, participation, and a sense of community. Another goal was to give young people a voice beyond the group, engaging them in public events, institutional forums, and digital narratives, enabling them to actively contribute to the social and political debate. LIAS – ACT 1 was therefore a project designed by young people and for young people, with a clear goal: to transform hardship into a resource, loneliness into connection, silence into storytelling, and passivity into action. Theater was a means to break down stereotypes, overcome fears, and rediscover the power of participation. The project's interdisciplinary approach integrated non-formal education, social research, artistic expression, and intercultural dialogue, creating a model that can be replicated in other contexts and leaving a real impact on the participants and the communities involved.
