The primary objective of the project "Reset" was to promote mental well-being within detention contexts, further articulated into specific sub-objectives: efforts were made to provide support to young detainees at risk of suicide or self-harm by creating an open space for dialogue that would foster the development of positive strategies to address emotional challenges. Another key objective was to standardize the knowledge of operators and other figures involved in detainee care regarding mental health, ensuring appropriate and generative interventions. Furthermore, considerable attention was given to raising awareness within the external community, aiming to reduce the stigma associated with detainees and promote constructive dialogue. Finally, the project included the design and implementation of mental health prevention programs in prisons, both in Italy and Lithuania, offering recreational, educational, and therapeutic activities aimed at improving the psychological well-being of detainees, while also fostering continuity and sustainability in the proposed initiatives.
RESET was initiated following the 2022 data published by the Legislative Assembly of Emilia-Romagna, reporting 114 suicides and 762 cases of self-harm in prisons during the first semester. In response, the association CUL-T APS identified the need to create support and dialogue spaces aimed at promoting the mental well-being of incarcerated individuals. After exchanges with international partners and recognising similar needs in Lithuanian detention facilities, RESET was designed to improve the mental health of young inmates in the prisons of Bologna (Italy) and Kaunas (Lithuania). The project focuses on preventing suicides, self-harming behaviours, and risk situations, while fostering prison environments aligned with constitutional principles of human dignity and rehabilitation. RESET is fully consistent with the priorities of the Erasmus+ programme, particularly regarding inclusion and diversity, the recognition of youth work, and the promotion of civic engagement and participation.
