The idea of the project came during the previously implemented youth exchange “The Big Picture” in Lithuania by its participants from Lithuania, Romania, Slovakia and Estonia. The participants were making promotional videos as awareness campaigns and wanted to construct thumbnail for their videos and make decent posters for the public event of the project, however, during the process they realized, that even though they use some kind of graphics daily in their personal lives, they lack competences of how to properly visualize, edit, what functions to use, how to send a powerful message visually and many more other aspects required to make at least half a decent piece of graphics, such a logo, thumbnail, banner, poster or flier, therefore the participants initiated planning of the possible project for solving this issue. This project was one of such solutions and its aim was to spark the inertia that affects or youth in two fronts: 1. Low level of youth entrepreneurship activities 2. Low level of access to digital and creative education, namely in graphic design. The partners in Slovakia, Romania and Estonia confirmed that they suffer from the same concerns in their communities and they would gladly join the project on the topic of graphic design as a way to fight youth unemployment without hesitation. Identification of the problem The levels of Youth unemployment in European Union (EU) in general have been increasing in the last couple of years, according to the statistics of 2021 by OECD it remains at unacceptable numbers of 16.9%. According to the available data at the moment of the project application, in LT, the national situation was above average with 14.8% but the situation was not generalized to every region in the country and it was higher in the Sudovia region where the association activates. The same happened in the small communities where our partners activate. The level of youth unemployment in EE was 15,7%, SK 19,6% and RO even 22,7%. These numbers were above the EU average (and still are) and send an alarming signal. Adding to this in all the 4 communities, there is a significantly low level of entrepreneurial activity, with young people not willing to take risks in creating their own opportunities. Graphic content is almost everywhere today. We do it regularly with our phones, we publish it and consume it in Social Media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Youtube or Twitter while posting attractive stories, posts. The latest statistics at the moment of the project application showed us that the global graphic designers industry was ranked #9 among all business activities. People can remember 65% of visual information 3 days later, and only 10% of written content. It is, without a doubt, an extremely powerful way of conveying a message, turning into not only a very helpful business tool, but also into a highly potential entrepreneurial activity by itself as the vast majority of businesses use graphics in their daily operations. The young people from all the 4 partner communities did not have easy access to the necessary environments where they could explore and learn more about this topic and so, this project aimed to provide that. Goal The goal of this project was to introduce or develop young participants’ skills in graphic design and boost their active engagement in entrepreneurial activities. The project had one mobility: a youth exchange which took place in Elniakampis, Lithuania. It involved 40 young participants from 4 countries: Lithuania, Romania, Slovakia and Estonia including 16 participants who were facing fewer opportunities and also 8 group leaders and 2 experts in the topic as facilitators and 1 staff member. Objectives By the end of the project we reached the following objectives: O1. Introduced participants from Lithuania, Romania, Slovakia and Estonia to all creative stages of graphic design. O2. Increased the confidence of participants from Lithuania, Romania, Slovakia and Estonia to engage in entrepreneurial activities using graphic design. O3. Raised the awareness of 40 participants from Lithuania, Romania, Slovakia and Estonia of entrepreneurial activities they could engage in by having graphic design skills. The objectives of the our youth exchange directly contributed to the Erasmus+ programme objectives and priorities.
