Objectives

The United Nations Agenda 2030 includes gender equality as one of its goals, yet gender disparities persist in every country. Despite progress in some areas, no country has achieved true gender equality, with only 14% of women and 10% of men having no gender bias, according to the United Nations (2020). These statistics are alarming, especially when it comes to women's representation in STEM fields, with only 34% of graduates in the EU being women (Girls Go Circular, 2022). While women globally obtain 53% of STEM university degrees, they only make up 29% of the STEM workforce, and only a third of STEM graduates are female. This under-representation of women in STEM fields starts at a young age, with the gap in STEM interests becoming wider through high school, college, and into careers. Negative perceptions of women in "masculine" jobs like scientists or engineers, as well as biases towards women in male-dominated fields, create a double bind for women in STEM fields, where competence and likability are crucial for success. To address the persistent stereotypes and biases in our culture, it's necessary to create a supportive environment for girls and women in our classrooms, workplaces, and society as a whole. This is where the DECODE 2 project comes in. The project partners aim to provide young women with an international learning experience in the field of STEAM education, with the goal of breaking the stereotypical bias of STEM fields being male-oriented and dominant. The DECODE 2 project's objectives are to increase the level of awareness of young girls on gender bias and gender stereotyping, to develop knowledge on gender equality and its importance, and to provide positive examples and hands-on experience of STEM subjects from a practical standpoint. By deconstructing gender stereotyping from its roots, the project hopes to provide preventive measures for the barriers that are to come ahead in girls' development. DECODE 2 project also aims to develop youth competence in recognizing gender bias through informal education methods. This will provide incentives for girls to understand and be more literate on the gender bias surrounding STEAM, as this knowledge is not a threat to their careers but a thing they can overcome these barriers.
