Objectives

The project "PumP it…empowered through sports" aimed to rethink youth engagement in civic affairs by addressing a range of interconnected challenges. At the outset, youth participation in civic life is hindered by societal, technological, and systemic barriers. The digital realm has increasingly diverted young people's attention from traditional civic involvement, for example participating in local community clubs, activities or centres, while academic and personal responsibilities often leave limited time for meaningful engagement. Urbanization and evolving social dynamics further fragmented communities, diminishing traditional spaces and opportunities for civic participation. This led to a clear disconnect between youth, civic organizations, and activists, resulting in a gap between aspirations and actual outcomes. To address these challenges, the project adopted an innovative approach that used street sports as a catalyst for engaging young people. It sought to bridge gaps in knowledge, opportunity, and awareness by promoting sports as a vehicle for health, well-being, and skill development. The initiative integrated street sports with soft skills training, emphasizing personal strengths, inclusivity, cooperation, dialogue, and social connection. The project’s core activities centered around an urban pop up festival format/roadshow. These initiatives provided a dynamic platform for diverse youth groups to engage directly with peers, the community in general and stakeholders. The project built upon the groundwork laid by a previous Erasmus+ Structured Dialogue Project, "Cities for Young People," which had highlighted the urgent need for safe youth spaces. One of the key goals was to empower young people to advocate for such spaces, using the influence of sports to enhance mental health and community cohesion. The specific objectives of the project were: To empower 325 different young people to become more active in society through engagement in sports. To implement 6 Roadshow festivals, reaching 325 youths and enabling them to participate in decision-making activities related to youth civic engagement and healthier lifestyles. To present 1 comprehensive set of policy recommendations to policymaker
