Objectives

With the project Outside the Mask, we aimed to create a safe and empowering space for Young Persons who Stutter (YPWS) to explore their identities, build self-confidence, and connect with others who share similar experiences. Stuttering often impacts daily life in profound ways, and many YPWS feel the pressure to conform to societal expectations of fluency. This can lead to feelings of isolation, self-doubt, and a tendency to hide their true selves. Through this project, we wanted to help participants step "outside the mask" they feel compelled to wear in daily life. Using the metaphor of the mask, we encouraged participants to reflect on the roles they play in different situations, the parts of themselves they want to reveal, and how they can create and choose masks that empower rather than limit them. The objectives of the project were to: -Increase competences around self-esteem and self-acceptance, by exploring themselves and each other through theater, creativity, body language, dance, music, games, and public speaking. We used the metaphor of a mask to help participants show their true selves, the person outside the mask, and to play with the different masks they choose to wear in various situations. -Increase the sense of initiative among the group, by organizing together, sharing responsibility, and sharing knowledge from previous Youth Exchanges. -Provide a learning opportunity for practicing foreign languages and customs, not only in a social setting but also in a semi-professional setting, when taking part in meetings regarding organizational tasks. -Increase self-confidence by having social connections and interactions, without focusing on stuttering (because everyone stutters anyway), and help each other take off unwanted masks and create new, positive ones. -Enhance intercultural learning, by creating an open space for intercultural dialogue. -Increase the awareness of being a European citizen, by getting to know people from other parts of Europe and building long-lasting connections and friendships. -Enhance opportunities for local (stuttering) organizations to get involved in international partnerships and to learn from each other. -Increase knowledge of the Erasmus+ Program and its Key Actions among participants and the partner organizations. By implementing this project, we created a space where stuttering was no longer a limitation but a common and connecting factor. This allowed participants to fully express themselves and build meaningful connections across borders. The metaphor of the mask gave participants the tools to better understand themselves, embrace their roles in different contexts, and explore their potential for personal and social growth.
