Objectives

Save the Children Norway started working with the youth program “On Equal Terms” (På Like Vilkår) in 2019 to fulfill the objective of establishing projects for teenagers in Norway. Drawing inspiration from Sweden, where the On Equal Terms has grown to be a large national program in 7 cities reaching thousands of teenagers throughout the year. The program in both countries is based on employing young adults (forum leaders) from disadvantaged areas to work with the empowerment and engagement of local youths. After very successful study trips with Save the Children's På Like Vilkår/On Equal Terms groups in 2021 and 2022, this project was to travel with young leaders (called forum leaders) to visit our colleagues in Gothenburg who have been working with the same project for 10 years more than the Oslo project. Our objectives were: For our 4 newly employed forum leaders the study trip was an important part of their training, for them and for our more experienced forum leaders the trip aimed to inspire and motivate and improve their theoretical competence and practical skills for their work. For all of our forum leaders and the two project leaders the study trip was organised to Develop relations, ties and channels of communication between the Norwegian and Swedish projects. The forum leaders met colleagues from the regional office in Gothenburg who have been part of establishing the program in Sweden, and with their counterparts who run youth forums and programs. To optimize the full acheivement of our objectives we organised two days of workshops in Stockholm with forum leaders, project leaders as well as regional and national coodinators from Oslo, Tensta, Backby and Malmø. There were three objectives for this trip: 1.for the our senior advisor to meet with the national coordinator in Sweden to discuss the content and form of the workshops in Gothenburg and how this trip can be a foundation for continued cooperation between Norway and Sweden. 2. For the forum leader to meet counterparts from the On Equal Terms project in Rinkeby, Stockholm and learn how they have tackled a recent surge in violence among the youth there and the international media attention this has attracted. The information gathered during this meeting will be discussed with the national coordinator and the senior advisor from Norway and will subsequently form the content for a workshop on the second day of the study trip. 3. For the senior advisor, forum leader and the national coordinator and closest colleagues to discuss how Radda Barnen ensures good working relations between the forum leaders and the senior staff in the head and regional offices, what kind of support Radda Barnen offers the forum leaders and how Radda Barnen documents learning gained by the forum leaders. The results of this discussion will also form the basis of a workshop during the study trip The project also had the objectives of contributing to the EU's youth strategy through: 1) contributing to meaningful participation from young people (Engage) 2) contributing to youth workers being able to participate in mobility activities across national borders (Connect) 3) contributing to youth work being able to support youth empowerment by giving them better opportunities to participate in society and to influence (Empower)
