Objectives

The objectives of the Back2back youth exchange project set by the participants were: - a desire for personal development through learning about other European cultures, which was achieved by organising an 8-day exchange programme rich in art and digital skills workshops, group work on mini-projects, discussions, games and national evenings. - learning about the history of these countries, which included theatre workshops and a visit to the Auschwitz Museum - discovering cultural similarities and differences, during specially prepared workshops on the subject and in free time - making international friends and acquaintances - the 8-day programme was an excellent opportunity to make new friends, many of which are still maintained between the participants - developing knowledge of environmental protection and climate change, driven by meetings and discussions with hikers on the mountain path about the situation in the Tatra National Park, - spending time together in close contact with nature, which stimulates the imagination, calms and inspires. Above all, the whole exchange took place in the picturesque village of Poronin in the Podhale region. The Austryjok centre that hosted us is surrounded by fields where sheep and goats graze, with mountain pastures and forests not far away, where we also carried out some activities (including workshops facilitated by Finnish participants). Finally, going on a mountain trail together (which, due to weather conditions, was organised already on the second day of the programme) was one of the most exciting moments of the exchange and a huge test of strength for the participants, who do not normally do sport. Spending almost the whole day in nature (the trail took longer than planned due to the poor condition of some participants), and especially reaching the Morskie Oko Lake, had a very positive impact on the participants' well-being and motivation to actively participate in the further exchange programme. - developing communication skills, including the use of foreign languages in practice. The participants presented a very different level of use of English, which was the working language during the exchange. There was one person in the Polish group who needed language support. In the Finnish group everyone understood, but many people were too shy or felt very insecure to express themselves in English. The German group had the largest number of people who needed translation, so one of the group leaders or a volunteer participant translated all the class instructions into German and sometimes some of the participants among themselves also into Arabic. From the information received from the German group leaders during the preparation phase of the final report, we learned that in retrospect the German participants had significantly improved their language skills, which was reflected in their school grades in English. - sensitising ourselves and others to diversity, building awareness of the different needs of individuals and a willingness to take on the challenge of including them in cooperation, learning and spending time together. Much of the exchange, and mainly due to suggestions in this area from the participants themselves, was devoted to taking care of the wellbeing of the people involved and their needs. At the beginning, an exercise was conducted in which everyone could anonymously voice their concerns and needs, which were then read out in the forum. This ensured that all participants were made aware of the situation of the other participants and invited to collectively ensure that everyone was included in active participation with their individual needs in mind. This included the need for additional language support, changing to a different venue (the conference room to the field in front of the centre and vice versa, depending on the needs) or accepting to participate in a passive form due to a temporarily worse mood.
