Objectives

We designed this project based on our experiences from previous initiatives run by our organisation, during which we noticed that young people are eager to be active but lack the appropriate tools and platforms to implement their ideas. They don’t receive adequate support in preparing and carrying out initiatives. In their surroundings, there is a lack of active community members from whom they could learn and with whom they could collaborate. Our observations before the project - based on our work with young people and project evaluations - indicated that youth often lack the skills and knowledge necessary to engage in social life and face various barriers that limit their involvement. This is often due to current social, economic, or political circumstances. Another important issue we identified is the lack of prosocial attitudes - behaviours that benefit other people or groups. This is often linked to a lack of empathy and the ability to respond to different situations. Many young people lack knowledge and experience in areas such as first aid or awareness of disabilities, which makes it harder for them to take action. In response to these challenges, we created a space for sharing experiences related to active participation in social life and mobilising for action. The project was based on participants identifying the factors that support active and prosocial attitudes, as well as the obstacles that hold them back. Together, they developed solutions to enable themselves and other young people to become actively involved in social life - locally, nationally, and internationally. The aim was to foster prosocial behaviour based on responsiveness, helping others and caring for one another, cooperation, and collaboration. We focused on active social participation, with special attention to empathy and understanding others. Participants explored various topics through seven thematic blocks, including responding to the needs of others, engagement in NGOs, cultural participation, volunteering, and support for the elderly. During the exchange and afterwards, the project promoted prosocial behaviours and encouraged engagement and active citizenship. By involving young people from various countries - Poland, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Portugal, Bulgaria, Türkiye, Italy, and Georgia - we were able to examine the project’s themes from different perspectives, considering the social, political, and historical contexts of each country. This made the discussions and collaborative work even more thought-provoking and inclusive of different realities.
