The Journey of Unity project was developed to empower youth workers and teachers through the use of storytelling, mental health and leadership, using the Hero’s Journey as a guiding framework. From the beginning, our aim was to strengthen the capacity of educators and youth workers to become resilient leaders and effective collaborators, able to foster cross-border understanding and cooperation. The project set out to help participants explore their own “heroic narratives,” and through this process, inspire them to create meaningful change within their communities. By doing so, we wanted to increase youth participation, promote empathy, and build a sustainable network of educators committed to unity and inclusion and the promotion of mental health awareness - firstly by looking inward at our own situations and then to the young people we work with in our communities. Our objectives were rooted in the EU Youth Goals, particularly those linked to social inclusion, mental well-being, and active citizenship. More specifically, we aimed to: Promote inclusive education and youth work practices – equipping participants with tools and methods to value diversity and ensure every young person feels seen, heard, and included. Support mental well-being through storytelling – using creative storytelling methods as a way to build resilience, encourage emotional expression, and provide safe spaces for processing experiences. Encourage cross-border collaboration – creating opportunities for participants to learn from one another, share cultural perspectives, and engage in joint projects that nurture teamwork, empathy, and mutual respect. Cultivate leadership and mentorship skills – strengthening the ability of youth workers and teachers to guide, inspire, and support young people in overcoming challenges and stepping into active roles in their communities. This project also directly aligned with the EU Youth Goals: Social Inclusion (Goal 7): By empowering educators to create inclusive learning environments, the project integrated diverse voices and experiences, fostering an educational ecosystem where every young person feels valued and included. Mental Well-being (Goal 2): Through the therapeutic use of storytelling, the project addressed mental health challenges creatively, contributing to resilience, empathy, and emotional well-being. Active Citizenship (Goal 9): By fostering cross-border collaboration and highlighting the value of diverse perspectives, the project nurtured a sense of active citizenship. Participants engaged in joint projects and cultural exchanges, learning cooperation, respect, and responsibility as global citizens. We also wanted to showcase the power of storytelling and how by using creative methods you can get young people to engage around different hard hitting topics and open up on such areas as mental health and wellbeing - We believe as an organisation in the power of storytelling to create dialogue and give people a platform to have their voice heard. Participants learned about how to utilise smart phones as a creative tool to tell stories, to engage with young people and create powerful videos that can be shared with thousands straight away through social media. The main objective of this particular activity was to show how accessible it is and even if the youth workers/teachers weren't familiar with using phones to create movies - it was easy and accessible for all. The Hero's journey was chosen to also showcase the storytelling framework can be used to create workshops, structure training and be used as a tool for dealing with mental health and also leadership. In essence, the Journey of Unity project aimed to transform youth work practice by empowering educators to create inclusive, resilient, and globally aware learning environments. Through the combined use of storytelling, leadership, and the Hero’s Journey, the project sought to provide participants with the tools to inspire young people to embrace challenges, grow in empathy, and take an active role in shaping society. This project was very important for us especially in current climate of the world that we live in where there are lots of anxiety, conflict, cost of living crisis, migration and exile issues, political violence and persecution and cases of mental health are growing at an alarming rate. The Journey of Unity was to show that there is another path, there is other ways to combat these issues by creating spaces for dialogue, spaces to creatively give young people a voice, to bring together to share experiences and give them ways to manage their mental health and how they lead in life (whether as a leader, or as part of a team). We wanted to give hope, to give a new way of working with sensitive issues and start the participants on their journey to unity.
