Objectives

The main goal of the “nextgen” (Przestrzeń Młodych) project was to create a space for the exchange of knowledge, perspectives, and experiences among young adults (aged 18–30) from Warsaw and the surrounding area, who are interested in some of the most pressing contemporary social challenges: the energy transition and the housing crisis. The project served as an alternative to the often superficial and polarized public discourse and responded to the need for in-depth, high-quality non-formal education. The main objectives of the project: Increasing participants’ awareness and knowledge of the energy transition and housing policy - through regular thematic meetings led by experts and decision-makers. Participants not only gained knowledge but also learned to understand diverse perspectives and the political and economic mechanisms shaping these realities. Strengthening social and civic competencies - the sessions were based on non-formal education methods that foster interaction, reflection, and teamwork. The project promoted values such as responsibility in communication, social sensitivity, and critical thinking. Creating a "third place" for young adults - the series of weekly meetings provided a space for integration, relationship-building, and community, which had been particularly lacking after the pandemic. Participants could develop intellectually while also connecting with others who share similar interests. Amplifying young people’s voices in public debate - participants prepared essays, summaries, and recommendations that were shared with public institutions responsible for energy and housing policies. In this way, the project had a tangible impact on decision-making processes and strengthened the visibility of young people as an opinion-forming group. Disseminating knowledge and project results online - communication activities included short educational videos (Reels, TikToks), social media posts, and promotion of participants’ essays. This ensured that even those outside the main participant group could access educational content and engage in the discussion. The project aligned with the European Youth Goals, particularly in the areas of creating spaces for participation, promoting a fair society, taking climate action, learning from each other, and supporting quality education. The “nextgen” project was a continuation of previous initiatives by Fundacja Ważne Sprawy, addressing needs identified during earlier editions of Przestrzeń Młodych. The project’s key innovation was its focus on two specific topics - rather than many - and an extended cycle of meetings that allowed participants to engage more deeply with the subjects explored.
