Objectives

Our TALES project was designed to foster greater cultural understanding and appreciation among the young participants from the existing diverse backgrounds. It aimed to achieve several interrelated goals that benefitted not only the direct participants but also the locals of Madeira, the tourists, and back home through the participant’s communities. This by the overarching objective of promoting intercultural dialogue and cooperation. By engaging participants in their traditional dances, crafts, and folklore activities, we created an environment that encouraged hands-on learning about appreciating their own and each other's cultural heritage. The exposure to the various cultural practices of their peers helped them recognise the value of diversity and be open to different perspectives. The project also focused on participant’s skill development. Training in digital storytelling, videography, and photography equipped participants with the tools to creatively capture and share their experiences. This enabled them to document their journeys, express their thoughts and feelings, and share cultural narratives with others. Another crucial goal of ours was to establish inclusive platforms for self-expression and expose the progress of their learning. We sought to provide our youngsters with unique opportunities to voice their opinions, their experiences, their culture, tell stories, and learn from one another. Through several activities, workshops, and group discussions, participants engaged in meaningful dialogues that fostered and built on a sense of community and belonging. Additionally, the project aimed to enhance participants' communication, personal growth, personal development, teamwork, and leadership skills. As each national team organised team-building exercises, energisers, and collaborative activities to help each other develop these essential interpersonal skills, that will continue to benefit them both personally and professionally. We also empowered participants to become active cultural ambassadors in their communities. By raising awareness and building skills related to cultural heritage, we encouraged them to be proactive in preserving and promoting their traditions. Participants built a sense of pride towards their own traditions, and by learning of their peers cultures and traditions, they returned home with a greater sense of European identity and cultural expressions. Through this, participants were motivated to share their experiences and insights with the broader community, fostering greater appreciation for cultural diversity. In summary, our TALES project aimed to inspire transformational experiences among youth by promoting their intercultural understanding, enhancing their skills, providing inclusive platforms for expression, developing their capacities for meaningful interaction, and let’s not forget the growth through the use of digital tools and platforms. The anticipated outcomes reflected immediately being their improved cultural awareness, enhanced communication skills, and stronger community bonds, ultimately contributing to a more tolerant, cohesive society by maintaining and reinforcing their presence in cultural and traditional events.
