Our project tackled urgent needs and issues among youth, focusing on a better understanding of: Mental Health Concerns: Participating countries acknowledged the necessity of addressing the rising prevalence of depression and mental health issues among young people. Participants were surprised that Portugal had the highest chronic depression rate in the EU, even compared to their own countries that also faced substantial challenges. They also acknowledged that the pandemic further exacerbated these issues, with more than 55% of the EU population reporting a risk of depression. Absence of Connection with Nature: The project aimed to reconnect youth with the natural world by leveraging Soajo's natural surroundings and healing potential. Modern lifestyles, particularly among the digital generation affected by COVID-19, social media, and digital dopmaine dependency, led to a significant disconnection from nature. Included in the project's objectives were the following: Promoting Mental Resilience: Our project empowered participants to confront and understand their traumas through mental health activities such as meditation and yoga, guided by our Portuguese psychologist. These activities were inspired by the book "The Courage to be Disliked." and the Adlerian approach. Increasing Interaction with Nature: Hiking, trekking the river, guiding sheep accompanied by a local shepherd, kayaking, sunrise viewing, and nature expeditions in the town of Soajo, allowed participants to observe nature's restorative properties under the Portuguese mountain expert's guidance. Promoting Personal Growth and Mindfulness: daily personal journaling and self-reflection workshops emphasised living in the present moment, understanding their emotions and feelings, and promoting personal growth and mindfulness. A supportive and safe environment made easier the sharing of experiences and emotions, enabling participants to let go of past traumas and live more freely. Fostering International Collaboration: By involving participants from five different countries, the project promoted cultural exchange and understanding, embracing diversity and fostering inclusion and dialogue. Participants not only learnt about each other's cultures but also discovered similarities in each other's mental health struggles. They found also that a lack of connection with nature is occurring in all the participating countries. Our "The Courage to be Liked" project provided a transformative experience by addressing these issues, fostering a deeper connection with nature, mental strength, and increased mental health understanding and resilience. It significantly contributed to participants personal development and well-being. By the conclusion of the project, a strong foundation of our youngsters empowerment grew in personal development and mental health had been established. Participants were provided with the tools to advocate for themselves and others, enhancing awareness and interpersonal skills. The emphasis on environmental sustainability and knowledge sharing enriched their experiences, creating a ripple effect in their communities. The initiative's enduring influence continues to inspire a new generation of empowered youth committed to enacting positive change in their lives and the world.
