Objectives

The concept behind this project was directly linked to a noticeable deficiency in critical thinking skills among young people. We viewed youth exchanges as an opportunity to address this need by equipping young individuals with critical thinking techniques and methods to empower them to express their opinions effectively and respectfully. Critical thinking, at its core, involves a range of individual skills, including the ability to evaluate our own beliefs and assess various topics impartially, free from emotional bias. In the project's first phase, we introduced a model through formal and non-formal educational approaches. Later, in the second phase, participants collaboratively developed the "Theater for You(th)" play. Finally, the project’s last stage offered them the chance to apply their newly acquired methods, effective communication strategies, and public speaking techniques. Regrettably, contemporary society undervalues critical thinking, rhetorical education, and young people in general, leading to a decline in the importance placed on effective communication and thinking processes among young people. These skills are, in fact, powerful tools for improving our lives and achieving success. Troubling statistics highlight issues like unemployment and educational disparities in society. One European Commission initiative, the "Youth Employment Initiative" (YEI), aims to reduce youth unemployment to less than 25%, especially among those over 25 who are not in education, employment, or training. To achieve this, the YEI supports the Youth Guarantee, which takes measures to provide young people with good-quality employment, continuing education, and additional conditions within four months of leaving school or becoming unemployed. This approach aims to facilitate labor mobility, foster lifelong skills development, increase workforce participation, and better align labor supply and demand. We aimed to implement a project focused on the critical thinking and communication skills of young people, recognizing these as essential for personal growth and, in turn, national development leadership, and prioritizing the inclusion and empowerment of marginalized young people with fewer opportunities—an Erasmus+ priority. Many individuals from vulnerable backgrounds face low self-esteem, with fear and a victim mentality as significant obstacles to their advancement, which we aimed to address through this project. Additionally, a revealing survey from the National Institutes of Health indicated that most students (63.9%) ranked the fear of public speaking as their top fear, even surpassing the fear of death for many. For some, this fear involved speaking in front of large groups, while for others, it extended to one-on-one interactions. Consequently, our project objectives included: - Cultivating critical thinking through theater simulation games; - Advocating for causes without necessarily opposing other viewpoints; - Enhancing understanding of others' thought processes; - Fostering the practice of objective analysis; - Promoting eloquence in articulating arguments; - Initiating an unconscious self-analysis process; - Exposing participants to effective communication techniques; - Providing opportunities for interaction and practice with individuals from diverse cultures; - Strengthening competencies and skills related to communication, public speaking, and comprehension. The questions and needs we sought to address in the "Theater for You(th)" project included: - Assisting vulnerable young people in boosting their self-esteem and communication skills; - Supporting young individuals in overcoming their fear of public speaking, improving general communication skills, and reducing their victim mentality; - Equipping participants with effective techniques and methods for developing critical thinking; - Contributing to improved social inclusion and employability among young people with fewer opportunities.
