Objectives

By implementing the project, we aimed to address and combat the persistent stereotypes and structural racism faced by minority groups within the EU. Our objectives were in alignment with the EU Anti-Racism Action Plan, striving to create balanced and positive narratives that promote awareness of a more inclusive society. According to the EU Anti-Racism Action Plan, stereotypes about racial, ethnic, and minority groups have persisted for centuries, often portraying these groups negatively. Such stereotypes reinforce and deepen social and physical divisions for these groups. The EU Fundamental Rights Agency (FRA) reports indicate that discrimination and harassment are daily realities for minorities across the EU. For instance, in the five years preceding the survey, significant percentages of Roma, people from North Africa, Sub-Saharan Africans, Travellers, and Jews reported feeling discriminated against due to their ethnic or immigrant backgrounds. Harassment based on ethnicity or immigration background was also common among Muslims surveyed, with nearly half experiencing six or more incidents in the year preceding the study (2022). We sought to end this situation and ensure that structural and institutionalized racism, deeply rooted in history and still prevalent, was seriously addressed in our Union. Despite the EU adopting several policy documents, including "A Union of Equality: the EU Anti-Racism Action Plan 2020-2025" and creating a new position of EU Anti-Racism Coordinator, the prevalence of racism and discrimination remains high across different segments of the population in various Member States. Nearly one in four (24%) respondents from various ethnic and immigrant minorities across the EU reported feeling discriminated against in the past 12 months. After a detailed analysis of our project topic and extensive research, we concluded that this project is highly relevant to the EU as it directly addresses the objectives and criteria set forth in the Anti-Racism Action Plan. The project aimed to provide holistic and active solutions to combat discrimination and intolerance against minority groups. We included digital tools and the production of creative videos that tell the stories of these minorities, using various forms such as personal interpretation, animation, puppetry, etc. Additionally, we planned to create a manual documenting all the interviewed individuals' stories to educate the community, advocate for, and support minority inclusion. This training manual would also include a methodology for conducting in-person activities inspired by the stories, such as art exhibitions, community murals, and other art displays, to be shared with the community through art-based activities. These efforts aimed to sustain the project's momentum, inspire new initiatives, and continue establishing valuable European partnerships. The project's objectives were: - To challenge biases, provide diverse role models, increase understanding and empathy, and advocate for legislative changes. - To amplify minority voices, recognize and promote their visibility, validate their experiences, and highlight their contributions to society, thus combating their invisibility and marginalization. - To foster positive interactions, active participation, self-reflection, and personal growth among young people from diverse backgrounds through a Youth Exchange that develops their key competencies. - To promote healthy behaviors through discussion, comparison of realities, and introduction of healthy practices during the project. - To raise awareness about the current state of racism in the EU and the efforts being made by the EU to improve the situation. - To promote diversity, intercultural dialogue, and intercultural learning, fostering a sense of unity through diversity within the EU. - To energize artistic processes in the EU. - To raise awareness about social inclusion in the EU and discuss solutions with participants through healthy group activities. - To promote the Erasmus+ program and the values of the EU.
