Objectives

The D&BeuropEU project was designed to address a problem that had been clearly and consistently identified in the local and national context: the low civic participation and fragile democratic culture of young Portuguese people. This phenomenon was the result of a combination of structural and cultural factors, namely the inability of the democratic system to remain attractive, accessible, and representative for younger citizens; young people's limited knowledge of how the political system works; and the significant lack of soft skills and skills related to active citizenship and democratic culture, which are rarely taught effectively in schools. In this context, the project's main objectives were: -To promote civic participation and democratic culture among young people through artistic expression and non-formal education; -To promote the development of young people's soft skills, empowering them for civic participation; -To introduce young people to alternative forms of participation that are in line with their needs and characteristics; -Connect young people with the political decision-makers who represent their community, promoting joint reflection on the problems that threaten it. In addition, the project aimed to: -Empower young people to “learn to learn,” valuing autonomy in their personal and professional development process through their active involvement in the various phases of the project—planning, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation; -Strengthen the connection between young people and their community, reinforcing social ties and promoting a sense of responsibility and civic engagement; -Explore, through artistic expression, European values, fundamental rights, and the importance of diversity and interculturality, fostering social cohesion, inclusion, and European identity; -Encourage the responsible use of technology and the development of digital skills through the cross-cutting use of digital tools throughout the project, contributing to resilience against disinformation and media literacy; -To involve young people in building a fairer and more sustainable society, aware of current challenges—such as climate change, the rise of extremist movements, and social exclusion—and promoting democratic and inclusive solutions. By implementing D&BeuropEU, we aim not only to increase youth participation levels during the project implementation period, but above all to leave a lasting impact on the democratic awareness of participants, strengthening their autonomy, critical thinking, and active involvement in building more participatory, inclusive, and resilient communities.
