In the fall of 2023, we asked the leadership of the Székelyszentmihály Unitarian Parish of Székelyszentmihály to help us reduce or recycle the waste generated in our backyards. Since recycling waste does not fit the profile of the Unitarian Church of Székelyszentmihály, we were advised that if we approach the leadership with a concrete idea, they will help us to implement it. Following this advice, we decided to conduct a community needs assessment among the young people of Székelyszentmihály and, based on the responses we received, to formulate our needs and present them to the parish. The two lessons from our survey are that young people in the parish have very little knowledge about sustainability, but are open to improvements. The other main finding is that they are keen to learn internationally, i.e. to be part of a learning process with other countries. The main reason for this is that they want to improve their language skills, which could help them in their future job. For these reasons, the project has set the following objectives: - improving the environmental awareness of the young people concerned - learning recycling practices - developing language and entrepreneurial skills The protection and sustainability of the environment is one of the most important issues facing us young people. Not least because today's actions overshadow our future. By comparison, we see that our own peers lack the knowledge to lead a more environmentally responsible lifestyle. Our survey also highlighted this problem. We therefore wanted to improve both our own and our colleagues' environmental awareness to support sustainability efforts. While the survey revealed a lack of knowledge about sustainability, it also clearly showed that there is a lack of awareness about the concept and practice of recycling. In a small rural community, it is useful to know the recycling practices of waste generated around the home. In the survey it was considered important, as we consider it important, to create a program where we can develop our English language skills. We therefore also asked the parish to help us to involve a non-Romanian organization where they could develop their skills. In order to find a suitable partner, we sent, with the help of the parish, the relevant questions from the survey carried out in the municipality to organizations known to our host organization. In this way, we were able to find a partner who could fully identify with our objectives and contribute fully to their realization.
