It is widely acknowledged that the population in rural areas was declining at the European Union level. Upon analyzing EU statistics, it became apparent that young people had the highest unemployment rates. Moreover, employers in rural areas struggled to find suitable candidates to fill agricultural positions. Population decline in rural areas: According to Eurostat, the population in rural areas of the European Union decreased by 0.4% between 2011 and 2022. This trend was particularly evident in countries like Romania, Bulgaria, and Croatia, where the rural population decreased by over 10% during the same period. Youth unemployment rates: In 2022, the youth unemployment rate in the European Union was 17.3%, according to Eurostat. However, the rates varied significantly between countries. In Greece, Spain, and Italy, for example, more than 30% of young people were unemployed in 2022. Agricultural labor shortages: According to the European Commission, agricultural labor shortages were a significant problem in some rural areas of the EU. In 2020, a survey conducted by the Commission found that 41% of farmers reported difficulties in finding suitable workers for their farms. The problem was particularly acute during peak periods, such as harvest time, when demand for labor was high. Given the need for our participants to develop skills in agriculture and rural entrepreneurship, we, together with our partners from Hungary, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Greece, Spain, and Slovakia, decided to launch a project that covered topics of interest for young people. This initiative aimed to provide opportunities for young people and NGOs from the European Union to acquire new skills in sustainable entrepreneurship. The partners expressed their eagerness to join the project due to the unique needs of the target group. Specifically, the youth they worked with faced challenges that prevented them from participating fully in social and cultural life. It was essential for these young people to connect with others in similar situations from different parts of Europe and learn about the opportunities available to them. Our participants came from rural areas and small towns where agriculture was no longer a popular topic of interest, especially among youth. The project aimed to educate them on sustainable agriculture and how it could be a viable means of earning a livelihood. In doing so, we supported them in reducing unemployment and increasing their interest in actively engaging in agriculture. Moreover, this initiative promoted sustainable rural entrepreneurship in small towns, which led to an increase in the population of these areas. The purpose of this initiative was to enhance the understanding of sustainable agriculture as a way of life for 35 young participants from HU, BG, CZ, GR, ES, SK, and RO, while also fostering their connection with rural living. Together with our consortium members, we established several objectives to support the young participants in building their future. They included: Helping the 35 young participants from HU, BG, CZ, GR, ES, SK, and RO through informative sessions and interactive workshops to identify and access financial resources to develop sustainable agricultural projects in their regions. Providing the young participants with a better understanding of agriculture and the opportunities it offered by organizing field trips to local farms, agricultural cooperatives, and agricultural research centers to give young participants a hands-on insight into agriculture and innovations in this field. Presenting information about rural lifestyle, traditions, and culture to the young participants during the 9-day activities. Encouraging intercultural dialogue, learning, and a sense of being European among the 35 participants. Equipping the 35 young participants from the 7 participant countries with the skills to implement sustainable agriculture methods in their communities. Increasing tolerance and acceptance among participants from seven countries, including those with fewer opportunities, during the 9-day activities. Encouraging the young participants to adopt a healthier lifestyle through the acquired knowledge.
