Objectives

The Step into Democracy project, implemented by the AHA Federation in partnership with the Bucharest Municipal Students' Council (CMEB), took place between March 1, 2024 and January 31, 2025, with the financial support of the E+ KA154 program. Launched in response to the low level of voting participation among young people in Bucharest, the project aimed to increase their civic participation and contribute to an active democratic culture. The interventions were adapted based on an analysis of local and European needs and took the form of workshops, events, campaigns and mobilities, focused on information, training and civic engagement. The project team was formed within the TINERE+SC course, where the initiators combined their experiences and desire to bring a positive impact to the community. The project brought together over 250 active participants, also involving over 15,000 young people through the online and offline information campaign. Adriana and David conducted a research during the writing stage, based on which she created the "needs tree". From here we understood that young people have a low voter turnout and a lack of interest in the electoral process. Thus, we created the "result tree" to finalize the structure of the 11 months of activities. All three main objectives established within the "Step into Democracy" project were achieved, some even exceeded, significantly contributing to increasing the degree of civic participation and developing the democratic skills of young people in Bucharest. Objective 1: Increasing awareness of the importance of voting for at least 15,000 young people This objective was achieved => through the online and offline information campaign, the project reached an estimated number of over 15,000 young people aged between 17 and 24 in Bucharest. = The campaign included: posts on social networks, direct visits to high schools, dissemination events, distribution of information materials, collaborations with young opinion leaders and promotion in public spaces. An active online community was created on Instagram, with over 4,000 direct interactions and over 125,000 impressions, and offline the project activities were promoted in over 35 high schools in Bucharest Objective 2: Development of civic competences for 190 young people. This objective was achieved. In total, 190 young people participated directly in the “Step into Democracy” workshops, national mobility and European study visit. They were involved in interactive activities about EU institutions, local and national decision-making processes, mock elections, debates, meetings with decision-makers and educational visits. All participants received Youthpass, and the final evaluations confirmed a significant increase in the level of democratic understanding, communication skills, teamwork and critical thinking. Objective 3: Active involvement of 20 young people in the community. The 20 young people and members of the implementation team were directly involved in organizing the activities, promoting the project messages and coordinating the information campaign. They contributed to the dissemination of the results, organizing sessions in high schools and maintaining contact with the target groups. Some of these young people became local resources in their own communities, later getting involved in independent civic initiatives, continuing the impact of the project. The 20 young people involved were from both the AHA Federation and the CMEB. They stayed with the coordinators and are working on a new follow-up project. Adriana Bebelea - AHA Coordinator and Luca Ciubotaru - Professor at the Faculty of Law and active member of civil society contributed to achieving these objectives.
