Objectives

The project aimed to help young people from different backgrounds feel stronger, healthier, and more included in their communities. The project idea was born during the Covid times, as then we have noticed that many young people struggle with stress, isolation, and unhealthy habits, especially those with fewer opportunities. Through this project, we wanted to show them how sports, volunteering, and teamwork could help them feel better about themselves and more connected to others. And we also wanted to thank all the volunteers that wholeheartedly helped the Red Cross and other organizations in the Covid times, reaching out to the ones in need and promotes the spirit of volunteerism, so that is why we called the project H.V.A.L.A. or Healthy Volunteerism Accretes Local Action. In the project we focused a lot on building soft skills like leadership and teamwork. By involving participants in fun and challenging group activities, they learned how to work together, solve problems, and support each other. These are basic skills that each individual needs and took home and use in their everyday lives, not just for themselves, but to make a positive difference in their communities. Social inclusion was also really important aspect in the project. A lot of the participants had faced barriers in life, whether it was because of their economic situation, where they lived, or other challenges. We wanted to make sure everyone felt welcome, safe, and valued. Sports were a great way to bring people together because they’re universal as they didn't need to be fluent in the same language to play on the same team or cheer for each other. Bringing young people together from six different countries was very important for them as a lot of intercultural sharing and learning happened. For many of the participants, this was their first time to cooperate with that many participants from other cultures. They got to share their stories and experiences, learn about each other’s perspectives, and build friendships that will last long after the project ended. But the most important thing was helping participants to be active leaders and changemakers, who will continue be volunteers and inspire positive changes. By the end of the project, we saw so many young people feeling more confident and ready to take action in their lives. Whether it’s involved in volunteering actions, starting a new activity in their hometown, or just living a healthier lifestyle, we have seen their positive energy and attitude towards the project aims.
