The purpose of this project was to allow the young people in our organisations to have the opportunity to make an exchange that would not be possible otherwise. There is currently no opportunity for international exchanges within the framework of the informal and non-formal music teaching activities that we conduct. Our basic aim was to bind social and cultural ties between Swedish and German young people, regardless of background, where we created a forum for young people to discuss conditions and limitations in their music making, and also discuss broader issues such as cultural and existential topics during the full timeframe of the project. Throughout this project, the participants were given the opportunity to meet both physically and digitally in ways that will contribute to their overall development. Our intention was to provide the young people with tools for this, but also let them create their own tools to be able to implement this project on their own terms. This is what helped define the three main objectives of the project: 1. Musical and artistic development: The participants in the project would be given a rare opportunity to develop their musicality both technically and emotionally. Piano is a demanding instrument that requires a lot of practice and effort to master. By participating in varied types of repertoire, solo, duo and piano-orchestra, the participants could evolve their skills in the field. Artistry is also a craft that is important to develop for a young musician today. This project would raise awareness about this with a goal to help the young people find their personal artistic voice. To shape yourself as an artist requires opportunities for performance and it is essential to play on different stages and meet a varied public. The project design allowed our participants to encounter this and develop their skills in these areas throughout the year. 2. Social and cultural exchange: The inter-cultural meetings and exchanges would form a central, important part of this project. We want our participants to have a cultural experience to take with them further in life. The young people in the project would live with host families and this will give a direct contact with the cultural habits and nuances in the country of the visit. Our objective is that this would give an understanding and place for reflection for how people in the host country live their lives. We also incorporated cultural activities such as visiting museums, concerts, landmarks and the natural environment during the mobilities. These are important elements for understanding the culture and history of countries in the EU. We wanted to encourage the participants to form connections and friendships with each other and hopefully be friends for life. 3. Build lifelong learning: During this project we wanted to combine music and artistry with the social and cultural life. Our aim, as stated earlier, is to form friendships, where some will hopefully be lifelong. This implies a learning that is on both a musical and social platform. An important objective of this project is therefore to build a lifelong learning in music with friendships that last, upon a foundation of EU values such as inclusion, diversity, democracy and environmental sustainability. Today, Uppsala kulturskola is one of the leading cultural schools in Sweden, with approximately 3,600 students who participate in activities every week during their free time. Today we have one of Sweden's largest piano departments with 19 piano teachers and we give approximately 140 concerts and performances per year. Piano lessons take place both individually and in group form. The Leo-Kestenberg Musikschule in Berlin has approximately 4500 students and offers a large variety of instruments, classes, ensembles, orchestras and choirs for young people in their free time. The age of the students varies and the diversity of multicultural courses, classic, jazz/rock/pop and inclusion offered by the school is immense as is the diversity and the work with the special needs of students. There is also a program for gifted children and students who want to become professionals, which includes taking part in concerts and competitions. A social program is also in place where the school supports students with socio-economic difficulties. Both organisations in this project have had previous experience with Erasmus+ exchanges and have high ambitions that this exchange will also be a well-organized and successful, recurring activity. It is important for our young people and teachers, but also important for developing ties between our organisations and beyond. The purpose of this project was to allow students with different backgrounds to be integrated and work together, based on their own abilities and conditions. The project design allowed for a high musical and artistic level, with mentoring individually, in groups, and in workshops.
