Our main and central idea was to provide opportunities for young people to express themselves, cooperate, and contribute to a better future of the local community – and to make sure that these opportunities are competently recognized. The project aimed to encourage political and local participation of young people in the community. With the project, we wanted to respond to the need of young people for inclusion and active participation in political life, the need for educating young people about political processes and decision-making as well as participation opportunities in the local environment, the need for supporting organizations and associations in promoting active participation of young people, and the need for dialogue and cooperation between young people and local politicians and decision-makers. The objectives of the project were: Education of young people. Organizing workshops and activities that teach young people about political processes, elections, local politics, and decision-making, with the aim of developing knowledge, relationships, skills, and behaviors that enabled participants to actively engage in political life, understand political processes, and form their own views on political issues, as well as presenting European programs through interactive methods. Encouraging dialogue between young people, local politicians, and decision-makers. The goal was to empower young people to express their opinions and suggestions as boldly and confidently as possible – not only to be able to form opinions, but also to have the tools to articulate them. Active participation. Encouraging young people to actively engage in political processes such as elections and campaigns, and to express their views on important local issues, with the emphasis in the first part of the project on the European elections, and in addition, encouraging them to actively participate in other activities and organizations – both within and outside the Youth Center. Strengthening organizations. We wanted to support partner local organizations and associations in their efforts concerning the active involvement of young people in associations – and in the importance of co-decision-making by young people both in the activities of the association and in its highest decision-making bodies. Exchange of experiences. We wanted to enable the exchange of experiences and best practices among different organizations and associations, including those not youth-led or youth organizations; we wanted to raise awareness that young people can be the driving force of positive changes that can have broader effects on the local community if they feel welcome, heard, and included. Raising awareness in the community. We wanted to inform the wider local public about the importance of involving young people in decision-making processes. The qualitative objectives of the project were: Raising awareness and bringing topics such as elections, politics, inclusive society, EU institutions, and participation closer to young people. Encouraging solidarity, equality, strengthening, and emphasizing empathy towards social inclusion and tolerance, as well as the importance of human rights, also in connection with how elections, especially European elections, influence them. Strengthening critical thinking and self-reflection. Developing key competences and skills among young people. Increasing environmental awareness with initiatives related to sustainability. Improving the quality of project implementation at the local and international level. Promoting good practices and the values of the European Union program. The project "Voice of Youth: Participation for a Better Future" sought to address the needs of all involved parties, including young people, organizations, local politicians, and the community as a whole. With this project, we wanted to achieve lasting changes in our community that enabled young people to actively participate in shaping the future of the local community. We wanted to bring young people closer to topics such as politics, participation in the local community, sustainable Europe, and active citizenship in an engaging way. In short, we wanted to present to them topics and activities that may seem less interesting to them, especially to those young people who do not often participate in such events and participatory opportunities. Therefore, in the first part of the project, we wanted to address and emphasize last June’s European elections, and in the second part, participation in the local community, which mainly meant opportunities for involvement in associations and European programs offered by the Brežice Youth Center. We wanted to empower and engage young people towards active (self-)information, formation, articulation of opinions, and expression of needs and ideas. To NGOs, we wanted to show the broader contribution of young people to associations and consequently to the local community, as well as to present new
