Our Erasmus+ youth projct, "Chasing the Peace," was inspired by the rise of discrimination and hate speech in the media, particularly in relation to extremism cases. The consequences of such false information is severe, leading to social divisions and, in some cases, violence against marginalized communities. Disinformation, false information, and fake news contributed to negative stereotypes and biases against various groups, including migrants, refugees, and the LGBTQ+ community and this facts was our starting point to make difference in our communities. In our researches and exchange of ideas with our partner organizations and their young members we saw similar cases and challenges and decided to carry out this project. Following discussions with young people and youth workers at various Erasmus+ events, the decision was made to take action. Active dialogue, idea exchange, and collaboration were undertaken to lay the groundwork for the project. This led to the conception of our project, with the primary goal of fostering critical thinking within the media realm. The ultimate aim was to combat hate speech and discrimination in the media landscape by empowering individuals to identify false information and enhancing their critical thinking abilities. the objectives we worked on was: - Enhancing media literacy for 36 participants to identify false news and prevent hate speech. - Raising awareness about media discrimination issues from a European perspective. - Promoting tolerance through media communication. - Addressing violent discussions on social media platforms used by youth. We accomplished this through several online meetings, a youth mobility event in Slovakia in September 2024, and follow-up activities. These activities were based on non-formal education and focused on media literacy, hate speech, and fake news topics. Together with our participants, we created humorous fake news content and presented it at partner centers and within local communities to raise awareness and demonstrate how fake news can go viral, spread, and negatively influence people's perceptions.
