Objectives

This project was implemented as an international youth exchange project aiming to increase young people's awareness of the causes, effects, and preparedness methods of natural disasters. Natural disasters such as earthquakes and floods cause significant loss of life and property worldwide. The project was carried out with the awareness that young people need to be conscious of these disasters and prepared for them. According to statistics, the frequency and impact of natural disasters are increasing globally. Particularly, earthquakes and floods threaten many countries. Countries located in earthquake zones, such as Turkiye are at great risk. Therefore, it was conveyed to the participants that raising awareness and preparing young people for these disasters is of vital importance. Today’s youth do not fully understand the causes, effects, and possible consequences of natural disasters. Natural disasters such as earthquakes, floods, wildfires, hurricanes, and tsunamis have devastating consequences worldwide. Through this project, young people learned that these events affect not only their immediate surroundings but also much larger communities and ecosystems. By raising awareness, the project helped them become conscious global citizens who empathize with and support affected regions. Additionally, climate change is increasing the frequency and severity of natural disasters. Young people are inheriting a world with an uncertain environmental future. By helping them understand the link between climate change and natural disasters, the project enabled them to take action to mitigate its effects and advocate for sustainable practices. Through this project, young people received training on disaster preparedness and emergency response, contributing to the creation of more resilient communities. Equipped with knowledge and skills, they became individuals who can play a critical role in supporting their communities during crises. Teaching young people how to prepare for disasters, recognize early warning signs, and respond appropriately empowered them to protect both themselves and others. Natural disasters transcend borders and affect people from different backgrounds and cultures. This Erasmus+ youth exchange project provided young people with a unique opportunity to interact with peers from diverse cultural backgrounds. The project supported them in strengthening their global connections and fostering collaboration. Such an experience contributed to the development of more empathetic, open-minded, and cooperative individuals. Turkiye is one of the countries with the highest earthquake risk in the world. Throughout history, many major earthquakes have occurred, resulting in the loss of thousands of lives. Additionally, Turkiye is located on active fault lines, and hundreds of earthquakes occur each year. Since the 2000s, significant earthquakes in Europe have included the 2009 Italy earthquake (6.3 magnitude) and the 2011 Türkiye earthquake (7.1 magnitude), both of which were devastating. More recent earthquakes include the 2017 Italy earthquake (6.6), the 2018 Greece earthquake (6.4), and the 2023 Morocco earthquake (6.8). These earthquakes highlight the ongoing risk in Europe and other regions, emphasizing the importance of earthquake preparedness. Our project team designed and implemented this project with an awareness of these risks and preparedness efforts. This project not only provided young people with knowledge, skills, and values but also contributed to the creation of a more resilient, empathetic, and globally conscious society. Project’s Specific Objectives: 1. Participants gained an understanding of different types of natural disasters, their causes, and their effects on communities and the environment. 2. Participants were trained in disaster preparedness, including developing emergency plans, recognizing early warning signs, and responding effectively during a disaster. 3. Young people were equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to contribute to building resilient communities against natural disasters. 4. The link between natural disasters and climate change was highlighted, promoting sustainable practices and increasing environmental responsibility. 5. Young people from different countries and backgrounds collaborated on disaster-related projects, strengthening intercultural understanding. 6. Participants received an interdisciplinary educational experience integrating subjects such as geography, environmental science, emergency management, and cultural studies. 7. Connections and partnerships were established with local and international organizations working in disaster management and environmental conservation.
