Everything we eat, drink and use eventually ends up as garbage, and effective management of this garbage is of great importance for our environmental awareness. The main problem is not to completely eliminate consumption, but to do it in an environmentally friendly way. At this point, recycling plays a vital role in protecting our environment. It means more than just throwing garbage in the trash; it means keeping our environment clean and preserving resources by making discarded garbage reusable. Unfortunately, young people in our society and in the European Union are not aware of the problems caused by environmental pollution. A study published in Lancet shows that environmental pollution is responsible for approximately 16 percent of global deaths. Air, water, soil and workplace pollution causes the premature death of 9 million people worldwide every year. This is more than three times the total number of deaths caused by AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria. In Türkiye, environmental pollution causes the premature death of approximately 42 thousand people every year. Based on this data, the seriousness of environmental problems is clear and the role of young people in solving these problems is of great importance. Therefore, it is a vital task to educate young people about the potential effects of environmental pollution and to increase environmental awareness. Today, our consumption habits also negatively affect our environment. Glass bottles, PET bottles, paper towels, wet wipes, paper pens, packaging and more are an inseparable part of our daily lives. We use many materials for consumption, from glass bottles to PET bottles, paper towels to wet wipes, paper pens to packaging. Drinking water from the tap has been replaced by PET bottles, biscuits bought in boxes have been replaced by individually packaged biscuits and more. The only problem here is not that too much waste material is produced; it is that we get carried away by changing living conditions and pollute and damage the environment. What needs to be done is to teach young people the importance of recycling and evaluating waste. Zero Waste practices are an important example in this context. The Zero Waste Project, carried out within the scope of the National Waste Management and Action Plan launched by the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization in Türkiye, aims to manage waste effectively. This project, which was launched with the slogan "We added value to the future", aimed to help individuals adopt recycling awareness. One of the goals of the projects was to introduce good practices in environmental cleaning to young people and to increase environmental awareness in the local population. In this context, Mr. Selçuk R. Şirin's campaigns have been a great source of inspiration. The "Let's Clean Slovenia in One Day!" campaign launched in Slovenia has become a great success in cleaning the country. In light of the information we have explained above and the data we have shared, the main goal of our project was to "ensure that young people are more sensitive about environmental cleaning and to support them in taking initiatives to create a clean environment." In this context, our specific goals were as follows: 1. To teach young people the possible consequences of environmental pollution. 2. To explain to young people the importance of recycling solid waste materials. 3. To help young people get into the habit of throwing garbage in the trash. 4. To raise awareness in the local population about environmental cleaning. 5. To introduce young people to good practices in environmental cleaning. 6. To raise awareness among young people that a clean environment increases the quality of life.
