Objectives

Child labor in the agricultural sector and the disconnection of these children from education represent a serious problem worldwide. According to data from the International Labour Organization (ILO), there are approximately 152 million child laborers globally, with a significant portion of these children working in agriculture. It is estimated that around 108 million child laborers are engaged in agriculture, making it the sector with the highest concentration of child labor. Children working in agriculture typically come from low-income families and are often forced to drop out of school to contribute to their families. This situation leads to high school dropout rates among child laborers in agricultural areas, leaving many children deprived of basic education. Children who are disconnected from education lose the opportunity to access better job prospects in the future, perpetuating the cycle of poverty. Moreover, the agricultural sector exposes child laborers to dangerous and unhealthy working conditions. Factors such as exposure to toxic chemicals, heavy physical labor, and long working hours negatively impact their health. Additionally, gender discrimination is evident within the sector, with girls often working in invisible roles, increasing their risk of being disconnected from education. This situation demonstrates that the deprivation of education among child laborers in the agricultural sector is a serious global issue. To address this problem, it is crucial for the international community and local authorities to collaborate and implement measures aimed at ending child labor. In this context, the youth project we plan to implement has identified various objectives from a youth work perspective, focusing on the issue of child labor in agriculture. The primary aim of our project is to raise awareness in this field, encourage social change, and contribute to taking concrete steps toward reducing child labor. Raising awareness is one of the primary objectives of our project. Campaigns, seminars, and awareness-raising activities will be organized to draw society’s attention to the issue of child labor in agriculture, ensuring that the problem is understood by a broader audience. Increasing educational opportunities is another goal. Various programs will be developed to enable the schooling of children working in the agricultural sector, aiming to prevent them from dropping out and reintegrating them into the education process. Reducing risks is another important objective. Occupational health and safety measures will be taken for children working in agriculture, minimizing the risks they face and ensuring safer working conditions. To encourage social change, collaborations will be established with parents, employers, and local communities, raising awareness about the harms of child labor. Partnerships with local authorities and civil society organizations will be formed to promote and support policy changes to prevent child labor. Our project also aims to promote intercultural understanding by bringing together young people from different cultures to learn from one another, develop tolerance, and overcome prejudices. Enhancing personal development is another key component of the project. Participants will acquire new skills, increase their self-esteem, and develop leadership and teamwork abilities through non-formal learning activities. Promoting active citizenship supports our project’s goal of contributing to social benefit. It is aimed that young people will develop a sense of responsibility and belonging by participating in community-based activities. Encouraging inclusivity is an important principle to ensure that every young person in the project has equal opportunities, regardless of their background, abilities, or circumstances. Finally, empowering youth workers is among the objectives of the project. The goal is to enhance the knowledge and skill levels of youth workers and educators to ensure sustainable impact.
