Objectives

It has been revealed by various studies that the individual waste generation rate of Istanbul is above the European averages and recycling awareness has not yet reached the desired level. Especially in Ataşehir district, it has been evaluated that the efforts of local administrations to increase recycling practices should be supported. Based on this need, Ataşehir Private Bilgin Anatolian High School has been implementing ‘Classroom without Trash Bins’ practices for many years to ensure that waste is sorted correctly throughout the school, environmentally friendly habits are spread among students and recycling is made a natural part of daily life. With this in mind, the "Change Your Box" project was designed and successfully implemented as an international youth exchange activity between 28 November and 5 December 2024. The project aimed not only to raise individual awareness, but also to disseminate environmentally friendly practices initiated at local level among young people across Europe. Within the scope of our project, it is aimed for students to develop sustainable waste management habits both in their school life and in their private lives. Comprehensive activities were organised throughout the school to reduce waste production per capita, to separate the collected wastes regularly and deliver them to Ataşehir Municipality and thus contribute to the economy through recycling. In this process, both theoretical and practical trainings were provided to raise new generations as nature-friendly individuals. Within the framework of the Change Your Box project; - Participating students were enabled to observe the waste management systems in their countries on site, make mutual presentations and share intercultural experiences. - Workshops, practical activities, creative art projects and informative presentations were organised to raise recycling awareness. - Waste bins were removed from the classrooms and the effective use of zero waste points set up in the corridors was encouraged, thus creating a healthier and more conscious educational environment. - Poster designs, environment-themed social media campaigns and public interaction activities were carried out by the participants, raising social awareness on recycling and waste management. During the project, a strong intercultural interaction environment was established between young people from Spain, Germany, Poland, Greece, North Macedonia, Greece, Greece, North Macedonia and Turkey; different perspectives on common environmental problems were developed and universal environmental awareness was created. Change Your Box project has led young people to take permanent steps to contribute to the vision of an environmentally friendly future by increasing their awareness of both individual and social responsibility. It is aimed that the experiences and gains gained throughout the project will not only be limited to the participants, but also reflect on their environment and future initiatives.
