Objectives

"Are E.U. Ready for the Future" is a Youth Exchange project which aims to unite 36 young participants between the ages of 18 to 30 years old, on an intensive 9 day study journey exploring the creation, development, as well as future of the European Union within our current geopolitical context. By taking part in this Youth Exchange, participants will explore what the core values and motivations nations have when joining the Union, as well as examine what the core principles and values on which it has been built upon are. Given that democratic values are foundational to the formation of the EU, heavy emphasis shall be placed on the significance of voting, especially within younger demographics, placing an emphasis on how youth at an individual level can make their voices heard on not only a local, but also European Level. Through being introduced to the concept of the European Citizens' Initiative, and drafting mock ECI's themselves, participants will learn how to take active action towards creating conversations on a political level over issues they believe are most important for their future, thus empowering them towards taking initiatives within the democratic process. Given the context of the 2024 European Parliament Elections, through the implementation of our project we will be able to deconstruct the results of the elections, helping participants better understand the significance of what has happened between the 6-9 June 2024, as well as what the results mean for the period until 2029 with regards to how EU agenda can modify on a macro perspective. By doing so in a non-formal manner, we are able to instill participants with valuable information about the importance of voting, encouraging them to make use of their democratic right in order to better express themselves and their beliefs within society, making sure they are represented on a political level. Within the context of our project, we are involving a number of key young people and organizations which have started social movements in order to defend their rights, such as student representation bodies, human rights and climate change activists, which will be able to exchange perspectives, opinions as well as share their stories with young people involved in this project, given our emphasis on providing qualitative intercultural dialogue, as well as designing our project in such a manner which aims to include both experienced activists, political science students, as well as individuals who have little-to-no prior experience in democratic representation or politics, but are curious to find out more about these. As such, we are fostering an environment which creates the context of young people to learn valuable lessons and share opinions between each other, considering that experience is important to have, but a thinking outside the box approach from less experienced people has the possibility to bring immense added value within the conversations we will be having throughout our 9 day stay in Austria, leading to beneficial exchanges of ideas from each side. A further goal of "Are E.U. Ready" is of combatting the ever increasing phenomena of far-right, isolationist and Eurosceptic movements. Within our project's scope, we shall analyze such narratives coming from each country involved, deconstructing the arguments brought forth and putting them through analytic and philosophical lenses. We strongly believe it is important to approach this subject, and by being well informed with facts and statistics, young people can counter these narratives, hold meaningful conversations with their peers, and thus reduce the risk of their community being further attracted towards sympathizing with these movements. Given these narratives tend to address more disadvantaged individuals from society, be it NEETS individuals, or stemming from low socio-economic backgrounds, we aim to incorporate specifically these categories in our project - countering the way Eurosceptic groups rely on attracting these demographics with disinformation campaigns. Having these young people within our project's scope, will allow us to increase their critical thinking skills, as well as further present them with a number of direct methods with which the EU aims to increase their social mobility as well as empower them on both personal and professional levels - introducing them to EU backed programmes such as the larger Erasmus Framework, E+ for Young Entrepreneurs, EU Start-Up Nation Standard, Schuman/Bluebook Traineeships. We will have one beneficiary from each programme join us in a Human Library event, whereby participants can engage in informal conversations and find out how they can participate in such opportunities as well. We aim for participants to share their experience through our Dissemination Campaign, creating interactive presentations which will be held in local schools within their area, having them narrate the most valuable learning outcomes to around 300 students.
