The main aim of Lejo as an organization is supporting disenfranchised youth in Flanders with regards to the different aspects of their personal and social development. One important aspect thereof is the right to leisure and the informal education that comes with traveling and having experiences abroad. Since this is an expensive endeavor it’s hardly undertaken by youth born in families with less financial means, families that already struggle with making ends meat with regards to their basic needs. Lejo would like to extend a helping hand to these youngsters by providing them with an accessible international experience, something that is a given for many of these children’s peers. Through this experience we hope that the 18-years old learn important skills and competences surrounding empathy, communication, planning, organization, languages, culture, but also independence and solidarity or open-mindedness. On top of that we hope to spread awareness surrounding the importance of intercultural learning within a community – people with less opportunities – that traditionally does not get the chance to experience the latter. This would be beneficial both for the participants but also the broader network of people they reach – during their trip but also afterwards – as it would inform and highlight the benefits of the European Project and its efforts to support the European Youth, and hopefully spark interest withing that network to learn more about the European Union and undertake their own trips. Be that for school, work, internships, volunteering projects or just a relaxing holiday. In that way Lejo, together with the Erasmus+ Programme and DiscoverEU, would successfully combine informal education and cultural integration, while focusing on an otherwise neglected group of participants.
