The main goal of the project was to create a better living environment for young people in the region of Kazanlak and Stara Zagora, as well as in other parts of the country where we implemented activities (for example, in the area of Pamporovo and Smolyan). We achieved this through cooperation in the field of youth policies, focusing on environmental protection, healthy lifestyles, raising ecological awareness, and developing young people’s skills to live according to the “zero waste” philosophy. Since 2009, when we hosted our first volunteer under the European Voluntary Service, we have been working to address the following key needs within the framework of our accreditation: Individual and personal needs – supporting the personal, social, and professional development of young people by developing teamwork, problem-solving skills, and the ability to cope with crisis situations, especially in the context of the economic, social, and psychological challenges after the pandemic. Organizational needs – strengthening the potential and capacity of the organization, building beyond one-time activities, and creating conditions for retaining youth workers for long-term work in the region of Kazanlak and Stara Zagora. Community needs – taking concrete actions in the fields of environmental protection, health culture, education, and civic engagement in order to overcome ecological, social, and psychological challenges. We also addressed specific issues such as: lack of career guidance and limited job opportunities among young people; pollution and insufficient knowledge of waste management; overconsumption of resources; low civic engagement and social skills; lack of information and promotion of volunteering in Bulgaria; limited skills of youth workers to deal with disasters, emergencies, and first aid. A particular emphasis was placed on promoting youth volunteering, which is often underestimated in Bulgaria. We worked together with local institutions – kindergartens, schools, centers for people with disabilities, and nursing homes. A large part of the activities took place at the Eco Center “Green Europe” in the village of Srednogorovo, created specifically for training young people, youth workers, and volunteers in the field of environmental protection. Within the project, we also implemented specialized training modules aimed at developing young people’s practical skills: First aid and crisis response training In partnership with certified trainers from the Bulgarian Red Cross and Poland, as well as local experts, we organized several interactive modules during which participants learned basic first aid techniques – dealing with bleeding, burns, injuries, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and artificial respiration. The training included simulations of real-life situations such as disasters and accidents, helping young people to develop quick reaction skills and teamwork. In this way, participants improved their preparedness to respond to everyday incidents and to support the community and their organizations in emergency situations. Media literacy and content creation training Another series of activities focused on digital and communication skills. Through workshops and practical tasks, participants learned how to use different media tools, create photo and video content, write short informational texts, and maintain active communication on social media. This contributed to the promotion of volunteering and environmental initiatives, as well as to the development of critical thinking in working with information. Both training modules were highly valued by the participants, as they addressed their personal development needs as well as those of the community, enhancing preparedness for crisis response and raising awareness about sustainable media communication. In summary, the objectives of the Erasmus+ projects (activities A1–A3) were: Empowerment of young people and youth workers from the program countries. Building individual and organizational capacity. Promoting intercultural dialogue and active citizenship. Contributing to sustainable development and ecological awareness. Enhancing media literacy and civic engagement.
