The project started with the recognition that Climate change is one of the major challenges of our time which affects our mountains, the identification of the disconnection of youth in our local communities with the mountains and the lack of sense of responsibility towards the protection and respect of the mountains. Aiming to raise awareness about mountain protection and sustainability as well as the positive impact of mountain sports and activities for the physical and mental health of youth, we engaged youth with policy makers and experts discussing and proposing measures on how to increase mountain awareness among young people. One of the main proposals was that through non-formal education and outdoor learning we could achieve better environmental protection in mountains, thus take major steps to protect mountain areas against the impacts of climate change. By bringing the youth closer to nature and outdoor activities, increases their nature awareness and the mountain issues to be addressed, increasing the need for more mountain literacy. Activities such as hiking, climbing, orienteering and camping, will improve the mental and physical health of the youth along with their survival skills and green skills, improving their self confidence and development. Experiential learning through outdoor activities will lead to the creation of habits for best practices for mountain protection. All these conclusions led us to propose the “Action 4 Mountains: Enhancing Mountain Literacy through outdoor learning”, a Youth Exchange project that was approved and was implemented in Cyprus under the coordination of Active Zone Outdoor. The project brought together 37 young people from 5 EU countries Cyprus, Portugal, Slovakia, Romania and Bulgaria who lived, shared, experienced, learned and developed together. A4M objectives were: 1. to raise awareness on young people and communities on climate change and mountain sustainability 2. to exploit outdoor education aiming to develop green skills among youth to accelerate climate action 3. to promote health, reinforce physical activity on the mountains and create an alternative path for youth to enhance better mental health and wellbeing 4. to highlight the significance of mountain environmental protection and to create space for sharing good practices aiming to develop better environmental awareness 5. to promote intercultural dialogue, mutual understanding and respectful exchange amongst young people by using outdoor learning as the main vehicle for the communication of such values 6. to create the next generation of young leaders on mountain literacy that will increase their ability to develop mountain protection and respect among young people 7. to develop the tools Code of Conduct and Outdoor Games Cards to be exploited for their youthwork 8. to spread information about EU opportunities for youth and to develop further cooperation of partner promoter organizations in the field of outdoor learning including ERASMUS+ projects.
