Objectives

Ethno Cyprus 2024 was an 8-day youth exchange that took place in Limassol, Cyprus, in end of October and beginning of November 2024. The event successfully brought together approximately 25 young people from Belgium, Croatia, Cyprus and Jordan. This project was conceived with the ambition of leveraging the transformative power of music to empower young individuals and foster intercultural dialogue amidst a fragmented global landscape facing social, economic, and political challenges. At its heart, Ethno Cyprus 2024 aimed to bridge societal divides by involving youth in significant cultural exchanges and collaborative music-making experiences. The project's objectives were closely tied to key youth work principles and were achieved through several structured measures. Firstly, Ethno Cyprus 2024 created a secure and inclusive environment for young participants from diverse backgrounds. They shared and learned about each other's musical traditions and engaged collaboratively in creative practices. Music was employed as a universal language capable of transcending cultural barriers, offering an ideal platform for fostering mutual respect and intercultural understanding among the youth. Secondly, the project succeeded in empowering participants by enriching their musical abilities through non-formal education methods and peer-learning approaches. These methods not only facilitated personal and artistic growth but also reinforced essential competencies such as teamwork, leadership, and intercultural communication—skills that proved crucial in the globalized context faced by young people today. Ethno Cyprus 2024 also actively contributed to social inclusion efforts. By specifically involving local marginalized youth and providing equal opportunities for participation and creative expression through music, the initiative worked to combat discrimination. This inclusive approach aligned seamlessly with broader youth work goals focusing on empowerment, active citizenship, and broad participation. Additionally, Ethno Cyprus 2024 aspired to establish and consolidate a sustainable network among youth organizations, cultural institutions, and non-profit entities devoted to promoting intercultural dialogue and peace via music. Throughout the project, this network was significantly strengthened, extending its impact beyond direct participants to reach wider communities and inspire similar future initiatives across Europe and neighboring regions. Through this multifaceted and comprehensive set of objectives, Ethno Cyprus 2024 embodied the true spirit of youth work practice. By capitalizing on music's educational and societal potential, the project successfully addressed contemporary challenges, significantly enriching the lives of participating young people and positively contributing to the development of a more inclusive, tolerant, and peaceful society. The overall vision of fostering positive societal transformation through cultural engagement and artistic collaboration was thus realized, reaffirming the project's innovative and impactful approach to youth empowerment and intercultural dialogue.
