As part of the project, we organized a six-day Czech-German youth meeting with young participants from the Czech Republic and Germany from different cultural, social and educational backgrounds, during which we discussed together, using various forms of non-formal education, topics from our recent past that deeply influence our present. Two questions were at the heart of the discussions and educational objectives: 1. Is it possible to learn from history? 2. Is our own past worth learning about if it is repeated again? The unifying theme of the whole activity was human dignity - what it is, why it makes sense to protect it. In this context, the participants also addressed the questions of what shapes our attitudes and values, what life experiences are important for the young generation, and what values and attitudes unite people today. The development of society in recent years has put us all in a difficult situation. Uncertainty about the future, sudden changes and crises have undermined people's trust in the values of humanity, freedom and democratic principles and have become a breeding ground for populism, the division of society into WE and THEY, and the fuelling of prejudice and hatred. It also raises questions about the effectiveness and purpose of education about 20th century history, world wars, the Holocaust and totalitarian regimes as a memento and a warning. Using various educational forms and activities (discussions, excursions to sites of memory with prior preparation, creative workshops, meetings with memoirists), we motivated the project participants from both countries to work and discuss together and, on the basis of personal experiences or family histories, to recognize that the promotion of human rights and dignity are fundamental values that are meaningful to protect and develop. As a follow-up optional activity, which we extended our project by through a change request, we organised a student conference in Písek, Czech Republic, where we invited participants of the Czech-German meeting in Weimar - we already offered this activity as an optional follow-up in Weimar in October. The conference was attended by 7 participants from the Czech-German meeting in Weimar in October 2024 and 2 from September 2023. The leitmotif of the conference was the topic of discrimination and the history of the Roma minority in the Czech Republic. In addition to students from the Czech Republic and Germany, it was also attended by 4 students from Slovakia and 5 teachers from the Czech Republic, Germany and Slovakia.
