Objectives

The central goal remains to promote international and European understanding among young people through joint activities with the participating associations, to develop new standards, and to establish innovative exchange formats. The aim is to strengthen international cooperation and consolidate cohesion within the global youth hostel family—a concern that is particularly important in today's world. The overarching themes include education for sustainable development, historical and political education, interculturalism, healthy growth, identity formation, life planning, and the promotion of the European idea. These aspects are incorporated into every mobility program, even though each youth exchange and each specialist program has its own focus. Another goal of our youth encounters is to give young people from Europe the opportunity to get to know each other better, gain insights into different countries and cultural characteristics, and compare and discuss different perspectives, even controversial ones. The special character of our programs lies in the interplay of educational offerings, joint activities, and excursions that open up new perspectives for participants. This creates a learning space in which mutual exchange takes place and intercultural and subject-specific skills are expanded. This not only contributes to the promotion of sustainable and historical-political education, but also supports the examination of one's own identity and the realities of life in other cultures. Direct encounters with local people and their environment create a deeper understanding of different ways of life. At the same time, these formats also present particular challenges: the diversity of backgrounds and expectations requires pedagogical sensitivity and flexible didactic concepts. Linguistic differences, different ways of working, and cross-border organization demand a high degree of adaptability and intercultural competence. However, through targeted support for individual life planning and the conscious promotion of the European idea, a stable foundation for a strong European identity is created. Open program modules also enable young people to actively participate in shaping the program, thus creating space for joint action, self-efficacy, and lasting encounters.
