Objectives

The central goal of the project, as well as of IKAB-Bildungswerk, is to strengthen the social participation and political agency of young people—particularly in their role as active contributors to social and societal change. We see it as our mission to support the ongoing development and democratization of European civil society through non-formal political education and by building partnerships with organizations that share this vision. Our particular focus lies on young people with fewer opportunities, who often face barriers or exclusion from political education. Since our founding, we have established cooperation networks with partner organizations that work with disadvantaged youth and recognize the value of international non-formal learning mobility. Our daily work shows that access to European youth work is still not a given for many young people. One key reason is the lack of a broader societal narrative that highlights the impact and relevance of international youth work and recognizes it as an integral part of youth services. Through this project, we intensified our efforts to: provide more young people with fewer opportunities access to international youth exchanges, and improve the quality and long-term impact of these exchanges. Another key focus of the project was the professional development of youth workers. Our aim was to support them in strengthening their professional identity as political actors. While the political dimension of youth work is still often overlooked—both within the youth sector and in the public sphere—experts have long called for a critical, democratic, and empowering pedagogical practice. Such an approach should not merely promote predefined values but enable young people to develop a reflective relationship with Europe and to formulate new narratives for a participatory and democratic civil society. Youth workers play a crucial role in shaping how young people understand and engage with politics—and whether they perceive themselves as capable of taking action. However, there is a lack of adequate training and education opportunities to equip professionals to facilitate political learning processes effectively. Therefore, within the framework of this project, we: established and expanded new partnerships in the field of youth worker education and training, and developed and piloted competence-based training offers in the field of critical political education.
