Objectives

The main goal of our project was to raise awareness among young people about social issues related to urbanization, focusing especially on disadvantaged and minority communities by using social photography as a tool for education and local youth action. The project aimed to equip participants with knowledge and skills to use photography as a tool for making social change and to share these methods with their peers through informal and non-formal education. The project addresses two interrelated issues: the situation of disadvantaged/minority communities, especially young people, in cities, and alienated urban youth, and the similarities/differences in their experience. The project involved not only the theoretical and social aspects of photography, but also devoted special attention to its practical aspects, in the form of field visits and field actions. On the one hand, the proposed project was aimed at its specific target, urbanization, and how its derivative problems can be captured through photography, raising the awareness of young people regarding these specific social issues. On the other, one of the main expected results of the project was that participating young people can deploy the methodology of social photography to other issues that may arise in their communities, and use photography and social media content as a means of raising awareness and facilitate community action. This pictorial approach to raising awareness of social issues, and using that as means of facilitating community action by young people has the potential of capturing not only urbanization, but the heart and imagination of young people all across Europe.
