Inclusion of marginalised young people

Objectives

The Youth Exchange project Embrace aimed to foster an inclusive society for marginalized groups facing discrimination and limited social engagement opportunities. Implemented between 20 February and 1 March 2025 in Sivrihisar, Eskişehir (Türkiye), the project brought together 48 young people and youth leaders from Germany, Italy, Greece, Czechia, and Türkiye. It sought to enhance international youth cooperation by advocating for greater public awareness and national efforts against discrimination, hate speech, and racism directed toward disadvantaged communities. The exchange enabled young individuals to explore diverse cultures, traditions, and personal narratives, fostering empathy, solidarity, and understanding among youth with fewer opportunities. Throughout the eight days of non-formal education activities, participants actively engaged in inclusive dialogue, interactive workshops, simulation games, and group reflection sessions. These activities were designed to enrich their skills, behaviors, and knowledge in the field of social inclusion, human rights, and equal opportunity creation. The project also promoted sustainable collaboration between five youth organizations, supporting the exchange of national strategies and effective practices for combating social exclusion through non-formal education methods. The project addressed critical issues highlighted in the EU’s March 19, 2021 report on discrimination, which underscored the growing impact of direct and intersectional discrimination, harassment, hate speech, and racism on marginalized youth across Europe. Participants explored these challenges through experiential learning, while also learning about successful community-based practices to counter exclusion. Embrace demonstrated the power of the Erasmus+ Youth Programme and the NGO sector to empower young individuals to become agents of change, capable of raising awareness and leading local efforts for inclusive engagement. The project responded to the needs of young people from cities such as Ankara, Bonn, Breclav, Trieste, and Thessaloniki, many of whom face social barriers and challenges in cultural adaptation. Youth with fewer opportunities, including refugees, migrants, asylum seekers, and those experiencing discrimination, were meaningfully involved in all stages of the exchange. They gained new competencies through practical engagement, including leadership, teamwork, foreign language improvement, digital literacy, and civic participation. Participants also developed a stronger sense of initiative, improved self-awareness and confidence, and learned how to implement non-formal education methods in their local settings. They created follow-up plans to promote social inclusion in their home communities and became motivated to take part in future Erasmus+ opportunities. In line with the Erasmus+ Programme Guide 2024, the project also offered tailored support to Ukrainian participants, ensuring a fully inclusive and solidarity-based environment that reflected the evolving needs of youth across Europe. By the end of Embrace, participants had not only built lifelong intercultural connections but also left equipped with the tools, knowledge, and commitment to advocate for more inclusive societies across the EU.
