The central goal of our project ‘Democracy in Practice’ was to promote active and informed civic engagement among young people. We wanted to teach them about the importance of democratic values and processes and empower them to take responsibility for their social environment. The initial focus was on strengthening democratic self-awareness: participants were to gain a better understanding of the potential and functioning of democracy and recognise how they themselves can actively influence their local environment and society. In this way, we wanted to promote a strong sense of self-efficacy and participation. Another important goal was to promote international mobility. We wanted to give young people in particular, who had not yet had any experience with international encounters, the opportunity to gain new perspectives and develop intercultural skills. At the same time, the project was intended to motivate them to actively take advantage of the opportunities offered by the Erasmus+ programme and other European mobility programmes in the future. These objectives were implemented in concrete terms as part of the overall project ‘Democracy in Practice’ through the two specific activities ‘Be the Change’ and ‘Action Democracy’.
