Through this project, we aimed to address the growing risks that young people faced in the digital environment, especially the rise in online harassment, cyberbullying, and hate speech. With the increased reliance on digital platforms - intensified by the COVID-19 pandemic - we saw an urgent need to equip young people with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to navigate the online world safely and responsibly. Our main goal was to combat online bullying among high school students and young people by raising awareness of online harassment and hate speech, while promoting tolerance, inclusion, and human rights in digital interactions. We wanted to empower youth by improving their digital literacy and strengthening their understanding of how to recognize and respond to harmful online behavior. The specific objectives of the project were: - To develop tolerance and understanding among high school students and young people in order to combat discrimination and social exclusion during the youth exchange. - To increase awareness about cyberbullying and online hate speech, including the methods and impact of these forms of harassment, among the 30 participants from different European countries. - To enhance participants’ knowledge about how to stay safe online and how to protect themselves and others in digital environments. - To strengthen understanding of human rights and their connection to media literacy and online behavior. We also addressed several key needs: -The lack of formal education about online harassment in schools. - The need for young people to better understand their rights and how to defend themselves against online abuse. - The growing concern around misinformation and the need to equip youth with tools to identify and challenge fake news. - The need to support young people in developing self-esteem and confidence so they are less affected by negative experiences online. To achieve these goals, we used non-formal education methods such as awareness campaigns, creative and critical thinking exercises, and training workshops. We also applied qualitative research methods - such as social observation, content analysis, testimonies, and media analysis - to help participants reflect on real-life digital interactions and build stronger media literacy skills. In essence, the project aimed to foster a safer, more respectful online environment by empowering young people to become more informed, resilient, and proactive digital citizens.
