According to Eurostat statistics, as of December 2023, the youth unemployment rate in the EU, for individuals under 25, stood at 14.5%, marking an increase of 102,000 individuals compared to December 2022. Additionally, data from Statista revealed the youth employment rates among 15-24-year-olds in the participating countries in 2022: Germany (D): 5.75%; Serbia (RS): 24.85%; Czech Republic (Cz): 7.08%; Italy (It): 22%; Netherlands (Nl): 7.79%; Romania (Ro): 21.98%. Youth unemployment remained a global issue impacting economies, and fostering entrepreneurship among young individuals contributed to reducing the unemployment rate, as highlighted in the EY study, "Avoiding a Lost Generation." International studies indicated a growing interest in entrepreneurship across countries. While self-employment could be a great alternative solution for reducing unemployment, it also had the potential to create further job opportunities in the area. However, this option was still not a popular choice among the young people in Europe. The age distribution of entrepreneurs in the involved partner countries were as follows: D - 15.2% (2022), NL – 13% (2021), CZ – 7.1% (2017), RO – 8.7% (2019), IT - 10.2% (2016), RS - 13.2% (2012; no more current data was available). Through the Education and Employment Program (PEO) 2021-2027, in 2023, 18 funding programs were launched, in the total amount of 1.15 billion euros, aimed, among other things, at "activating the entrepreneurial potential of young people." Based on our interactions and conversations with our beneficiaries, particularly Roma youth in the community, it came to our attention that a considerable percentage of them (67%) did not currently hold employment. Furthermore, 74% had acquired digital skills exclusively through school education, lacking a clear understanding of entrepreneurship and the role of an entrepreneur. A significant majority (89%) also lacked the essential skills required to access information related to the entrepreneurial process, particularly in the online environment, and faced challenges in securing financing for their own business ideas (97%). Being aware of our work in youth-related activities, they expressed their interest in a mobility project that addressed their specific challenges. They aspired to learn from peers facing similar circumstances, delving into topics such as entrepreneurship and the entrepreneurial journey. Their curiosity extended to identifying opportunities within online businesses, understanding the intricacies of financing and development to establish employment in their ventures. This aspiration was inspired by the desire to manage their households independently and engage in the online sale of local products. Additionally, they were keen on acquiring knowledge about selling local organic products on digital platforms. In discussions with our partners, it became evident that their young constituents encountered similar challenges. Consequently, we opted to develop a project specifically designed to address these issues. The primary objective of the "Entrepreneurship: a path to employment" project was to offer young individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds valuable learning opportunities. These opportunities aimed to equip them with the essential knowledge, skills, and competences needed to recognize, initiate, cultivate, and market a business in the online sphere. The 42 young people from disadvantaged backgrounds and the 6 group leaders came from Germany, Serbia, Czech Republic, Italy, Netherlands, and Romania. The project responded to the following needs of these young people: Offering learning opportunities through Erasmus+ projects; Acquiring knowledge, skills, and competencies specific to entrepreneurship in the online environment; Facilitating young people's access to specific information about the initiation and development of a business idea in the online environment, about their funding sources; Employment in one's own business in order to reduce unemployment. The objectives of the project were: Objective 1: Enhance the understanding of entrepreneurship focusing on the online environment among 42 young individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds across 6 countries during the exchange; Objective 2: Foster the development of skills and competences essential for the identification, initiation, financing, and development of their own businesses in the online environment for the 42 young participants from disadvantaged backgrounds across 6 countries during the exchange; Objective 3: Support the access of 42 young individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds across 6 countries to information specific to entrepreneurship in the online environment throughout the project and after its termination.
