Inclusion of marginalised young peopleEuropean identity and valuesPreventing racism and discrimination

Objectives

The project targeted disadvantaged young people aged 13 to 17 from marginalised neighbourhoods in Berlin and Marseille who have limited opportunities due to their migrant background, social precariousness or poor educational opportunities. Many participants had already experienced discrimination and had little access to non-formal education opportunities. Roter Stern Berlin 2012 uses sport, especially boxing, as a means of reaching these young people, strengthening their self-confidence and teaching them social skills. The cooperation partner Addap13 also uses sport as a tool with similar focuses in its street social work, one of its areas of activity in Marseille, albeit from a socio-educational perspective. The main objectives of the project were: Empowerment of young people: The participants were to experience self-efficacy, take responsibility and make their own decisions within the group. Promoting social skills: The focus was on teamwork, conflict resolution, solidarity, empathy and the ability to adapt to new cultural contexts. Intercultural learning: Young people from different countries were to learn from each other through exchange, joint activities and language, break down prejudices and broaden their perspectives. Strengthening personal and professional prospects: Insights into sports methods, non-formal education opportunities and EU mobility options were intended to open up new opportunities and paths for personal development. Inclusion and participation: Sport as a unifying element was intended to integrate young people into a European community of values and show them that they can be active members of society. The project implementation included a round trip, each with preparatory visits, in which the young people were actively involved in the planning, implementation and follow-up. The project thus pursued both personal learning experiences and social learning by motivating young people to critically question their environment, take responsibility and act as multipliers within their social environment.
