Objectives

Our project targeted youth aged 18-30 (with few exceptions) and addressed gender equality issues (specifically–equity between men and women) and professional development. Therefore, it aligned with the European Youth Strategy and the United Nations Youth Strategy, both of which emphasize the importance of engaging and empowering young people, developing life and professional skills, breaking down stereotypes, and promoting diversity and inclusion. As an organization working predominantly with immigrant females locally, through our observations, we recognized the general neglect of the importance of intersectionality of identities. The project therefore aimed to enrich the E+ initiatives promoting diversity and inclusion precisely by highlighting the intersectionality aspect. This means that even though “Girl Power at Work” focused on the theme of gender in the workplace and in the pursuit of a career, it also acknowledged the interplay of gender with origin, ethnicity, religious and cultural backgrounds. According to research on the Nordic region (e.g. by Suvi Keskinen, 2020; Astrid Andersen, Kirsten Hvenegård-Lassen & Ina Knobblock, 2015), being a model in promoting gender equality, the intersection of women’s experiences is often pushed to the background. Through our YE we focused primarily on the female’s presence in the labor, as this area of life is noted to be a nodal point in gender equality narratives, and as labor is simply a crucial element of living a social life and participating in its civic aspect. Together we worked on constituting more universal solutions, that involve perspectives of varying countries and cultures, making it a more exportable piece of knowledge and experience. The European Youth Strategy, with its goal of providing opportunities for young people, recognizes the need to empower them to participate in society actively. This project directly contributed to the strategy's objectives, as we strived to provide participants and their peers, with the skills and knowledge necessary for personal and, particularly, professional growth, as well as for understanding gender-related societal issues in a better detail. Through cross-cultural interactions, sharing of inspiring stories, and collaborative learning within the group and beyond, including our guest speakers and the project team, we engaged in critical thinking on gender roles and workplace dynamics. We discussed theories related to the issue, inter alia, the general concept of gender equality, chauvinism present in the labor market, gender-related legislation, and empowerment in practice. But we also practically tackled it by holding workshops to improve the participants’ professional potential and guide them in their career-related decisions. Among our objectives was the development of participants’ critical thinking skills & knowledge, enabling them to question societal norms and advocate for gender equality. We strived to break down prejudices and stereotypes within and about the said societal norms and did that by fostering an intercultural environment and atmosphere that encouraged the dialogue and understanding. One of the key goals was also the shift of focus towards active citizenship and increasing the sense of initiative among the participants – by becoming confident in their career decisions, as well as developing a set of skills related to leadership and communication. These skills are invaluable in the labor market but also contribute to a larger positive transformation in the immediate environments of the participants. For the young people were encouraged to not only reflect on their own beliefs and biases but also to actively contribute to creating positive change in their communities – i.e. by organizing dissemination events. Additionally, the project placed a strong emphasis on reaching out to young people with fewer opportunities, as among its major objectives was intersectional inclusion. In this commitment, we involved partners facing challenges of the war and proximity to it, such as Ukraine or Jordan. Moreover, our collaboration extended to a Bulgarian organization, established as a result of the war, devoted to providing essential support to Ukrainian refugees now residing in Bulgaria. By providing them with a platform to participate and contribute, the project’s goal was to bridge gaps and empower those who may face additional challenges in pursuing their career aspirations. All in all, our major goal was twofold. On one hand, the project strived to empower young women in their careers directly through hands-on career-related activities. On the other, it also intended to instill the values of intersectional inclusivity and stimulate critical thinking on the matter of systemic challenges faced by women and girls. By promoting cross-cultural understanding, active citizenship, and skill development, we believe that our initiative contributed to fostering a more equitable and empowered generation.
