Objectives

The EYLEAD Youth Exchange aimed to increase democratic participation among European youth, particularly addressing the low voter turnout (42%) in the 2019 European elections among young people aged 18-24. The project sought to bridge the disconnect young people feel from EU decision-makers and their limited understanding of EU processes. Recognizing that democracy thrives on broad participation, the project focused on the importance of youth engagement to ensure legitimacy in decision-making and representation of diverse, future-oriented perspectives. The objectives of the EYLEAD Youth Exchange were as follows: –Increase Understanding of EU Institutions and Democratic Processes: We provided participants with in-depth knowledge about EU institutions, their roles, and the electoral processes, helping them recognize the importance of their participation in European democracy. –Equip Youth with Advocacy and Policy Analysis Skills: We trained participants in advocacy, campaigning, and policy analysis to foster meaningful dialogue with EU policymakers. –Develop Critical Thinking and Media Literacy: We enabled young people to analyze information critically, enhancing their media literacy to discern credible sources and understand media biases. –Promote Cultural Exchange and European Identity: Through intercultural activities, we encouraged mutual understanding and respect among youth from diverse backgrounds, promoting a shared European identity. –Establish Long-term Engagement with EU Affairs: We created an Alumni Network to sustain participants’ engagement with EU issues, empowering them as informed young leaders ready to influence EU policies. –Prioritize Inclusivity and support youth with fewer opportunities: We focused on involving young people from diverse backgrounds, especially those facing barriers to democratic participation, ensuring inclusivity and an equitable platform for all voices.
