TWIN set out to support the digital transformation of SMEs, especially in rural or disadvantaged areas, by addressing critical needs in digital skills, sustainability, and competitiveness. Specifically, the project aimed to: O1: Enhance Digital Readiness of SMEs by providing customized digital training and resources to improve their technological proficiency; O2: Foster Sustainability Through Digitalization by integrating green practices into digital transformation efforts, promoting eco-friendly initiatives; O3: Strengthen SME Competitiveness through the implementation of innovative digital strategies that enhance market positioning and competitiveness; and O4: Facilitate Collaboration and Knowledge Sharing by establishing a digital platform for SMEs to collaborate, share insights, and collectively address digital challenges and opportunities. These objectives were central to empowering SMEs and VET providers to respond to the demands of a fast-changing digital economy.
TWIN was developed in response to the urgent need to support micro and small enterprises in their transition toward digital transformation, particularly in rural and disadvantaged regions. Many SMEs in Europe, especially outside centralized big cities, face major challenges in adopting digital tools due to limited skills and scarce training resources. In areas like Western Macedonia, which has the highest unemployment rate in Greece, this gap leads to reduced competitiveness and economic isolation. By equipping VET trainers with updated digital competences and by developing SME-tailored training materials, the project aimed to strengthen the capacity of local businesses to participate in the digital economy. It addressed the dual need for digital upskilling in the VET sector and the modernization of SME operations through targeted, accessible vocational education aligned with labor market demands.
