Our Youth Exchange program was inspired and crafted carefully in order to cover a crucial need in today's society regarding young people's initial response to an emergency situation, particularly regarding natural disasters, with an emphasis on wildfires. As citizens of southern Europe, mostly Mediterranean countries, but also countries prone to such events, we have observed that there is an increasing need in cultivating a universal consciousness on disaster preparedness, first response, emotional resilience and sustainable attitudes. Through this project, we wished to inspire a positive shift of attitudes towards a more environmentally conscious and responsible human activity in nature. With a series of activities guided by experts in the field, participants received a quite introductory, yet comprehensive training on safety measures, preventive techniques and protocols, crisis management and emotional resilience. Taking the experience a step further, all aspects of our project were designed in a manner that highlighted the importance of hard skills as much as it did about interpersonal skills such as effective communication and teamwork, collaboration and leadership in a context of international participants. In this way, we created a context where participants would connect and create meaningful bonds and exchange ideas and experience around a topic that we consider a priority on a national as well as a European level of consciousness, acknowledging the interconnectedness of all participant European countries, the different systems of response and the common line of leading young people into an active citizenship stance engaging in inclusive processes that concern all young people about their own safety and that of the natural landscape as a whole. Before, during and after the project’s lifetime, we envisioned and managed to achieve an engaging atmosphere of all young participants in a series of stimuli that equipped them with practical skills and granted them with attitudes that benefited both their personal and professional lives, addressing critical environmental issues, encouraging a more inclusive, responsible and engaging citizen’s stance, advocating for sustainable practices and fortifying them with emotional resilience tools and practices. Our project focused on the following key objectives: Environmental Awareness: We aimed to strengthen young people’s understanding of environmental challenges, particularly wildfires and forest fires. The program promotes sustainable habits and responsible interaction with natural landscapes. Collaboration with forest authorities and the local Fire Department helped deepen participants’ knowledge of these issues. Fire Preparedness & Response: Participants learned practical skills for preparing themselves, their families, and their homes for fire-related risks. They also practiced the ability to respond calmly and responsibly during emergency situations. This hands-on learning was supported by educational materials, demonstrations, and training delivered by the Hellenic Rescue Team and certified First Aid and Basic Life Support trainers. Post-Disaster Biodiversity Restoration: The project contributed to participants' understanding about the recovery process following natural disasters, with a focus on restoring biodiversity in affected areas. They were encouraged to promote sustainable solutions within their own communities. The approach is inspired by ANIMA’s “Code of Conduct for Citizens in Nature,” highlighting key topics such as biodiversity protection, environmental legislation, and the needs of wildlife and ecosystems in different environments. Crisis Management & Emotional Support: A major part of our training was on navigating emotional challenges during crises. Participants learned strategies to cope with grief, panic, and high-stress situations, while also developing the capacity to support others. The emphasis was on Psychological First Aid and effective emotional management during emergencies.
