As we mentioned before, this program was the Vol.2 of the project that we had already implemented in the past, so we were very positive that the impacts would be as good as they had been the first time we implemented it. The program that we aimed to implement again had a general topic regarding recreational sports outdoors. More specifically, our main focus was how we could exercise while at the same time respect our environment and try to keep a general balance and harmony with it. Taking into account that, nowadays, the percentage of young people who lived an unhealthy life, without understanding the severity of the matter, had skyrocketed—with even more adolescents exercising less or not at all, not considering what they put into their bodies, taking up really unhealthy habits, or not paying attention to their mental health—made us take a stance. As organizers, we wanted to bring young people closer to healthier habits, not only to make them understand the importance of physical and mental health but also to give them the ability to take steps forward toward a better, wholesome life. We wanted them to adopt a more active, healthy lifestyle close to nature and to give them a variety of options that suited their day-to-day life. We truly understood that today’s youth had been brought up in front of a screen, and that was what they always sought. They constantly looked or scrolled through their phones and social media or played video games on their computers or other personal electronic devices. The phone screen had become an extension of their hand, and most of the time, they chose to spend time scrolling through Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok, looking at and admiring virtual lives of others that could not actually be attainable in real life, creating imaginary and unhealthy needs. It was an undeniable fact that today’s relationships had become more distant because people had lost interest in investing in them in a more substantial way, such as going on walks with friends or organizing physical activities like hikes or bicycle rides. Wholesome lifestyles stemmed from how a person had been raised. People who, from a young age, had encountered healthy living in all of its aspects were more likely to keep up with that lifestyle for the majority of their lives. On the other hand, teens who had not been raised on those paths had less motivation to engage in that kind of living and exercising. Less motivation could also be found in youngsters who did not appreciate their bodies, felt very self-conscious due to extra weight, or simply did not have the bodies social media tried to persuade as healthy and admirable. Feeling “weak” and generally underestimating one’s value made people look away from exercising and changing their mindset. This led young people to have higher risks of developing mental illnesses, heart conditions, weak bones and muscles, and to miss out on building a strong body, controlled weight, and generally a happier life away from diseases and major health issues. Environmental barriers, such as extreme weather conditions, limited parks or yards, and unsafe neighborhoods, were also some reasons that made young people stay away from physical activity. Our aim was to provide them with a safe space that they would look forward to going to because it exuded security, calmness, and serenity. That was the starting point for trying to include exercise in their daily lives. However, it was of utmost importance to point out that while exercising, we should always take into account the environment and its needs—being respectful and understanding how invading a space could have a detrimental effect on wildlife and the ecosystem in general. Our main goal was to show young people how small everyday choices could have great effects on their lives and that slowly but steadily they could create healthy habits that suited the needs of every individual and would eventually lead to a healthier, more wholesome life. Of course, we fully understood and took into consideration the life-changing effects that the global pandemic had brought, and that was exactly why we wanted and also seriously needed to restart our health journey so it could lead to the long-term results everybody should have strived for. We made a general motto that even small changes and steps were better than nothing, and more was better than less. At the same time, we wanted them to understand that physical activity required no special equipment or preparation—it was all a matter of mindset and effort in achieving important targets. In conclusion, we aimed to take action and share solutions on everyday concerns the youth had regarding their health and fitness journey. We wanted to open the conversation and make all participants discuss and share their thoughts and ideas The venue for our Youth Exchange was in Filiates, from 24 December 2024 to 02 January 2025, with 47 young people from Greece, Germany, Poland, Belgium, and Czech.
