Objectives

The overall aim of the project was to train and provide innovative tools to those working in environmental education in the Pyrenees, with a view to raising awareness among adults about climate change and its impacts on the Pyrenees through changes in plant-pollinator relationships. This objective was achieved through the following specific objectives: a) Delivery of two training sessions to 120 environmental educators on pollinators and how they are affected by climate change in the Pyrenees. b) The collective and collaborative creation, through a working group, of an educational kit to enable this group of environmental educators to address this topic, together with a proposal for interactive activities, in sessions aimed at adult audiences. c) Conducting 20 demonstration sessions on the materials created and the proposed activities, serving as training for 150 environmental educators, mountain guides and adult educators from across the Pyrenees. d) Promoting networking and the exchange of experiences between educators on both sides of the mountain range.

Background

The main need identified was to address the general public’s lack of knowledge regarding the relationship between plants and pollinating insects, and how this is affected by climate change in mountain ecosystems such as the Pyrenees. We have found that this is a topic that arouses great interest among adults; however, on many occasions, those working in environmental education have very little knowledge of the subject. Furthermore, we lacked specific tools or activities that would enable us to address this topic in an engaging way. Through the project, we felt it would be valuable to address this need by creating an educational kit containing specific materials, accompanied by an activity guide and training sessions for trainers across the entire mountain range. The aim is to reach a wider adult audience through the multiplier effect these educators will have in future activities they undertake on this topic. The materials created and the training received will contribute to the shared need to raise awareness among the adult population about environmental issues, focusing on climate change and the pollinator crisis.
