The "ESTIMA, a proposal for emotional well-being and support" project is aimed at young people between 18 and 29 years old who are in a vulnerable situation and/or excluded from the participating partner entities: Fundaçao da Juventude de Portugal (Portugal), Cooperativa Folias (Italy) and Fundació Catalana de l’Esplai (Spain) and is part of the Estima Educational Proposal, by Fundesplai https://fundesplai.org/estima/, a proposal that poses the challenge of getting to know ourselves better, of developing inner strength and respect and affection for ourselves and others. The purpose of the project and what we wanted to achieve is to be able to fight against social isolation, exclusion, invisibility, incomprehension, ignorance, rejection, discrimination, self-limitation, prejudices or the trivialization of mental illnesses, among other aspects, which have been developed in the youth exchange proposal based on prevention, but also on providing tools and support to young people facing mental health problems, from individual, group, community and social work that must be taken into account to improve their emotional well-being. In this developed youth exchange proposal we wanted to address the issues related to facilitating strategies so that young people have more resources for their comprehensive development, from prevention and observation, to detect possible signs and changes of an emotional nature. The “Estima” project has focused on 3 main axes/objectives: - Promote the capacity of young people to be protagonists of their own emotional well-being. - Raise awareness and be co-responsible for guaranteeing a safe and healthy environment that promotes the health and emotional well-being of young people. - Promote loving and caring for other people by developing an awareness that drives young people to act to have better emotional well-being. In turn, some transversal objectives of the awareness project on mental health and emotional well-being of young people have been raised, which have been: - Promote and develop the capacities of active citizenship, critical thinking among participating young people, from the perspective of rights. - Develop skills and attitudes of young people, to raise awareness on socially relevant issues and stimulate active participation in society. - Consolidate spaces for democratic youth participation at local, regional and European level, promoting the comprehensive personal development of participating young people, building bridges between them, promoting tolerance, and mutual understanding, to develop their ability to interact with other young European people, in a multilingual and intercultural context. - To promote analysis and the sharing of knowledge, experiences, etc., regarding the mental health and emotional well-being of young people. - To strengthen cooperative, sustained and efficient work between people from partner organisations that work with young people, promoting European values and breaking down prejudices and stereotypes about mental health to promote the necessary emotional well-being in life. From the perspective of intervention with the participating youth group, we have sought to achieve key aspects to improve their mental and emotional health based on: - The main objectives set have facilitated the ability to work on increasing awareness among young people about the importance of taking care of their emotional and mental health. This has involved working with young people on the basic concepts of mental health, such as stress management, emotional resilience and self-esteem. - The project has set itself the strategy of improving the practical skills of young people, such as knowing how to manage stress, anxiety and other emotional challenges they face in their daily lives. The practice of relaxation techniques, effective communication skills, and strategies to resolve emotional conflicts have been explored. - An important element has been to generate a supportive environment among peers where young people have felt safe to share their experiences and seek help when they need it. - Work has been done to reduce the stigma associated with mental health and work to combat discrimination associated with mental health problems, promoting an environment where young people feel comfortable seeking help and support when they need it. - Self-care and resilience have been promoted through healthy self-care practices among young people, such as regular exercise, a balanced diet, adequate sleep, and seeking activities that bring them joy and satisfaction.
